Overview

Incumbents are responsible for providing advocacy services to older adults, which may include providing information and referral, processing benefit applications, conducting home visits, preparing reports, selling taxi coupons, monitoring follow-ups, and performing related duties.

Responsibilities
  • Provide advocacy services to older adults, including information and referral, assessments, home visits, and wellness checks.
  • Evaluate needs and provide resources related to financial stability, legal issues, health care, etc.
  • Assist clients in navigating benefits and healthcare systems, acting as advocate for insurance and assistance programs.
  • As a certified SHINE Counselor, assist with Medicare, Medigap, Medicaid, and other programs.
  • As a SNAP outreach partner, assist with SNAP applications and recertifications.
  • Collaborate with Protective Services on cases of abuse, neglect, or exploitation.
  • Respond to emergency health and safety crises.
  • Manage taxi coupon booklets and cash.
  • Gather information and process applications.
  • Conduct community outreach and presentations about Elderly Commission programs.
  • Maintain records, reports, and data; meet deadlines.
  • Provide office coverage and on-call support.
  • Follow up timely to ensure resolution of services.
  • Maintain professional interactions.
  • Perform related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • At least 3 years of experience in human service programs, case management, or assessment.
  • Bachelors degree in social work or related field preferred.
  • Training or certification in counseling, case management, substance abuse, or mental health preferred.
  • AIRS and SHINE certifications preferred; must obtain within 1 year if not already certified.
  • Knowledge of health insurance and government benefits preferred.
  • Experience working with diverse populations facing complex challenges.
  • Effective communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and boundaries.
  • Strong advocacy, problem-solving, and reporting skills.
  • Proficiency in office software; bilingual skills preferred.
  • Drivers license and willingness to travel in Boston required.
  • Flexible schedule, including some nights and weekends.
Additional Requirements

City of Boston residency required. Subject to CORI check.
