Travel ICU RN – MedSurg ICU Overview

Location Requirements:

  • 100-mile radius rule (no locals within 100 miles)
  • Must have Epic EMR proficiency within the last 2 years

⏰ Scheduling & Time Off:

  • No 48-hour guarantees
  • No blocked scheduling requests
  • Max 5 days RTO (Requested Time Off)
  • Must work 2 of 3 major holidays : Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s
  • Shift: 6:45 – 7:15 (12-hour shifts, clock out for lunch)
  • 4 weekend shifts per 4-week period required
  • Self-scheduling available with 4 days off requestable per 4-week schedule
  • No call or standby
  • Float required to other units (max 4 patients when floated)
Unit & Patient Info

  • Nurse:Patient Ratios:
    • 1:1 or 1:2 (typical)
    • 1:3 only if no vents/drips

Common Patient Types:

  • Cardiac: open heart, balloon pump, impella
  • Neuro: post-tPA, small bleeds (if intervention needed, patient flown out)
  • Critical care: vented, sedated, sepsis, DKA, CHF, respiratory failure, pressors

Drips Required (Traveler Must Be Proficient):

  • Vasopressors: Epi, Levophed, Neo, Vasopressin
  • Inotropes: Dopamine, Dobutamine, Primacor
  • Antiarrhythmics: Amiodarone, Cardizem, Esmolol, Lidocaine, Procainamide
  • Antihypertensives: Clevidipine, Labetalol, Cardene, Nipride, Nitroglycerin
  • Sedatives/Paralytics: Precedex, Propofol, Ketamine, Versed, Rocuronium, Vecuronium, Nimbex
  • Others: Fentanyl, Heparin, tPA, Insulin, Argatroban, Aggrastat, Integrilin
