Common conditions include respiratory failure, sepsis, closed head injuries, multi-system organ dysfunction, endocrine disorders, complex traumas, and surgical complications. Candidates must be competent in the care of medical and surgical populations. Advanced skills in hemodynamics including pressor usage according to titration protocols are essential. Knowledge of antihypertensive drips, sedative and naloxone drips, thrombolytics, central lines, central venous pressure monitoring, external ventricular drains, and orthopedic traction is required. Infection prevention protocols and the use of high-flow nasal cannula, BiPap, and Cpap modalities are necessary. Candidates with large-scale adult PCU experience and community hospital ICU experience tend to perform well. The average patient load is three high-acuity patients. Weekend block scheduling may be considered. A competency test is required within 24 hours of submission.
