Certified Labor Arbitrator
to support labor and employment dispute resolution for clients in the Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C. region. This role requires deep expertise in interpreting collective bargaining agreements, resolving workplace disputes, and delivering fair, well-documented arbitration decisions. Position Overview The
Certified Labor Arbitrator
will serve as a neutral, independent decision-maker in disputes between employers and employees, particularly those involving unionized workforces. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in fact-finding, case evaluation, and the application of federal, state, and local labor laws. The role demands strong legal acumen, impartiality, and a commitment to due process. Key Responsibilities Conduct fair, impartial hearings to resolve labor disputes in accordance with applicable laws, collective bargaining agreements, and arbitration procedures. Review and analyze case files, evidence, and relevant documentation prior to hearings. Facilitate pre-hearing conferences to clarify issues, define procedures, and establish timelines. Examine and evaluate witness testimony, documentary evidence, and expert reports. Apply relevant labor laws, contract language, and precedents to render clear, well-reasoned written decisions. Maintain strict confidentiality and uphold the highest ethical standards in all proceedings. Manage case scheduling, deadlines, and communications with parties involved. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local labor regulations in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C. Provide expert guidance on dispute resolution processes, as needed, to client organizations. Qualifications Required: Certification as a Labor Arbitrator through a recognized body (e.g., Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS), American Arbitration Association (AAA), or equivalent). Minimum 5 years of experience in labor arbitration, mediation, or related dispute resolution work. In-depth understanding of labor law, collective bargaining agreements, grievance procedures, and relevant case law. Strong analytical, legal writing, and decision-making skills. Proven ability to remain impartial and manage complex, sensitive disputes. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Preferred: Juris Doctor (JD) or advanced degree in labor relations, employment law, or a related field. Experience working with public-sector unions and government agencies. Familiarity with workplace regulations in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C. Bilingual or multilingual capabilities. Hearings will be conducted on-site within Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C., with occasional remote/virtual proceedings as appropriate.
