General Description: Our consulting division is a construction consulting company specializing in forensic architectural consulting, cost estimating, and expert testimony for construction defect litigation cases. Our cost estimators research and establish appropriate construction costs for reconstructing and repairing construction defects and building problems, including waterproofing and building envelope failures, mechanical and plumbing repairs, structural deficiencies, and more. Attorneys generally hire us, and our internal team of cost estimators work alongside other industry experts to provide investigation, evaluation, and documentation to support or defend construction litigation cases. We collaborate with attorneys working for or against developers, builders, and subcontractors due to defects or failures in construction standards of care. Responsibilities: Produce professional, logical, well-supported, and easy-to-understand cost of repair estimates. Prepare estimates using Nautilus’ standard templates, applying standard labor rates and costs. Check and vet work for errors, including spelling, grammar, and formula errors. Communicate with the Director of Consulting to understand assignments, clients, deadlines, and constraints. Review expert reports to understand repair recommendations, and consult with experts as needed. Organize and save all relevant documentation for future use. Visit project sites to assess conditions, document with photos, and understand the scope of work. Build estimates aligned with other experts’ recommendations, including scope of work and additional items. Quantify repairs using various methods, enter data into spreadsheets, and save measurements. Price line items appropriately, making reasonable assumptions and documenting them. Adjust estimate mark-ups as needed, consulting with experts on fees. Review work with the President or assigned expert, seeking input and approval. Research to support estimates, including internet pricing, subcontractor calls, and cross-referencing past estimates. Maintain organized and accessible files and notes for each assignment. Collaborate collegially with team members and cross-check estimates. Requirements Bachelor’s Degree or 4+ years of construction experience with increasing responsibility, including estimating or project management. Office environment. Construction defect litigation or forensic consulting experience is a plus but not required. Proficiency in MS Excel, Word, Outlook, and internet research. Ability to interpret construction reports, plans, and specifications. Strong analytical, mathematical, and project management skills. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Superior organizational skills and attention to detail. Valid Driver’s License. Work Conditions Indoor office setting. Mainly computer and phone work, with some site visits. Fast-paced environment with interruptions. Frequent meetings and calls. Position Type Full-time, Monday to Friday, with possible evening/weekend work. Physical Demands Office mobility and computer/phone use. Navigation around active construction sites. Travel Regular travel to project sites via car or plane.
