Description
Overview
The VDC Engineer leverages virtual design and construction (VDC) methodologies to enhance project efficiency and collaboration. This role involves managing Building Information Modeling (BIM) processes, ensuring seamless integration of virtual design tools, and coordinating with project teams to optimize construction workflows.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is a journey-level professional job classification. It differs from the Senior VDC Engineer by its focus on execution of BIM plans, while senior-level is focused on strategic planning and mentoring other engineers.
Essential Functions
- Develops and maintains BIM execution plans, establishing project-specific BIM goals, standards, and processes.
- Creates accurate and detailed BIM models for electrical systems, integrating them within the overall project model.
- Manages clash detection and resolution processes to minimize design conflicts before construction begins.
- Provides technical support and training to project teams on BIM software, ensuring efficient utilization of virtual design tools.
- Conducts model reviews and audits to ensure adherence to BIM standards and project specifications.
- Facilitates interdisciplinary coordination meetings to resolve design conflicts and improve collaboration among stakeholders.
- Collaborates with contractors, subcontractors, and suppliers to integrate their models into the overall project model.
- Implements and utilizes emerging technologies, such as laser scanning, drone imaging, and augmented reality, to enhance virtual design and construction processes.
- Stays updated with industry advancements in BIM technology and participates in training sessions to continuously improve expertise.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering, construction management, or a related field.
- Three (3) years of experience in the electrical contracting industry, focusing on BIM and virtual design.
- Proficiency in BIM software and virtual design tools.
Preferred Qualifications
- BIM-related certifications (e.g., Autodesk Certified Professional).
- Experience working with laser scanning, drone imaging, and augmented reality.
- Strong leadership skills and ability to drive innovation in virtual design processes.
- Experience conducting BIM model reviews, audits, and training sessions.
OR an equivalent combination of education, certification, and experience that results in the successful performance of the job. Additional education may substitute for required experience on one-for-one year basis or vice versa.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of BIM methodologies, industry standards, and best practices in virtual design and construction.
- Knowledge of construction processes, electrical system layouts, and project coordination principles.
- Skill in using BIM software such as Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, AutoCAD MEP, and Bluebeam.
- Skill in clash detection, coordination, and problem-solving within virtual design environments.
- Ability to interpret construction documents, drawings, and specifications for effective model development.
- Ability to provide technical training and support on BIM workflows and digital design tools.
- Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and facilitate communication between stakeholders.
- Ability to implement new technologies such as laser scanning, drone imaging, and augmented reality into virtual design processes.
Work Environment
