Job Details Summary of Duties : Under basic supervision, the Water Aerobics Instructor is responsible for planning, setting up and instruction of water aerobics classes. Examples of ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job. Plans, organizes, and instructs water aerobics classes. Maintains class attendance and course records. Sets up and breaks down equipment for each class. Promotes public relations with facility users by receiving and responding to their questions. Performs general housekeeping practices in the aquatic facility. Ensures the safety of class participants. Attends in-service meetings; maintains current certifications. Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential. Marginal Duties : Performs other duties as assigned. Typical Decisions : The incumbent must be able to exercise good judgment to ensure a safe environment for participants; must determine which equipment to use to meet participant objectives. Minimum Qualifications : Knowledge of: Current instruction techniques; current water aerobics techniques; CPR and first aid; water safety procedures, rules, and practices. Skill in: Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing;demonstrating and teaching proper exercise techniques; interacting effectively with the public. Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Experience: Two (2) years of water aerobics instruction experience required. Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements. Licenses and Certifications: American Red Cross CPR and Standard First Aid certification. Water Fitness Instructor certification. Aquatic Exercise Association (AEA) Certification or equivalent preferred. Conditions of Employment : Must pass a drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check. Physical Demands and Working Conditions : Must possess mobility to work in and around City pools and facilities; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work; to perform swimming and aerobics routines; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves frequent walking to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, twist and reach when teaching and demonstrating aerobics routines and maintaining pool area. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 25 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment. Employees work in and around City pools and facilities and are exposed to loud noise levels, hot temperatures, chemical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes.
