The Assurance Experienced Manager is responsible for supervising, directing, and reviewing the results through delegation of tasks during the planning, field work, and wrap-up stages of an audit client engagement. This role also includes marketing, networking, and business development within an area of expertise, and ensuring engagement profitability through billings and collections. Typical responsibilities include advising clients on economic and regulatory risks within their industry, resolving complex accounting issues, applying GAAP and GAAS consistently, writing technical memos on GAAP/GAAS issues, and documenting, validating, testing, and assessing financial reporting control systems.

Responsibilities

Control Environment: Applies knowledge to establish or enhance effectiveness, mitigate risks in policies and procedures; validates and assesses the effectiveness of internal controls over financial reporting; identifies improvements and communicates them to management and the audit committee; assigns audit functions; supervises the work of the audit team and reviews workpapers and conclusions; provides on-the-job training to engagement staff during field work.

GAAP: Applies knowledge of GAAP and GAAS, and communicates understanding; identifies and consults with clients on the impact of new accounting pronouncements; monitors professional pronouncements; discusses alternative GAAP approaches and drafts complex financial statements and footnotes; resolves complex accounting issues with input from firm technical experts as needed.

SEC and PCAOB: Applies knowledge of SEC regulations and PCAOB guidelines; reviews SEC filings, MD&A, financial statements, and disclosures for form, content, completeness, and accuracy; ensures quarterly reviews are performed properly; reviews required communications to the client and Audit Committee; ensures independence requirements are followed.

GAAS: Applies professional standards and guides others; communicates matters to the Audit Committee/Board; uses efficiency tools such as sampling or CAATS.

Methodology: Applies BDO standards to deliver quality services; conducts detailed reviews to ensure audits comply with assurance manual standards; prepares communications to management and audit committees; plans audit processes and oversees execution; ensures proper archiving and adheres to Sarbanes-Oxley considerations for combined 404 and external financial audits for public clients.

Research: Applies methodology to seek information from authoritative sources; conducts research projects; prepares memos supporting conclusions; presents issues to RTD or concurring reviewer effectively.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises Associates and Senior Associates; reviews their work; provides career guidance; schedules and manages workload; delivers performance feedback; coaches staff for on-the-job learning.

Qualifications and Education

Bachelor’s degree required; accounting, finance, economics or statistics preferred

Master’s in Accountancy preferred

Six or more years of relevant audit experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience required

Significant supervisory experience required

Industry expertise in one or more assurance specialties preferred

Active licensed US CPA or recognized international equivalent; if international, commitment to obtain US CPA license within defined timeframe

Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with assurance applications and research tools preferred

Solid GAAP/GAAS knowledge; familiarity with SEC and PCAOB reporting rules

Other Competencies

Client development/relationship-building; strong decision-making and analytical abilities; ability to resolve complex accounting issues; responsibility for business development and engagement profitability including billings and collections
