Our Opportunity: Chewy is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for our fast-paced, customer-first Sponsored Ads team. This role is essential in launching innovative, customer-facing products designed to delight and engage Chewy’s advertising partners, while scaling our advertising technology and strengthening brand partnerships. As a senior team member, you will help craft, build, and deliver intuitive, performant, and scalable front-end experiences that power ad creation, campaign management, creative tools, and performance reporting across Chewy’s digital ecosystem. Sponsored Ads at Chewy creates a mutually beneficial ecosystem—offering pet parents relevant product options and deals while enabling brand partners to improve transparency and reach through targeted placements. Advertising is a rapidly growing, strategically important component of Chewy’s e-commerce platform and a key driver of incremental revenue. In this role, you’ll demonstrate your deep expertise in front-end engineering to lead the development of engaging web experiences for both advertisers and internal users. As an early team member, you’ll shape the technical strategy, own core areas of system architecture, and influence the user experience across Chewy’s retail platform and advertiser portal. You will also lead the team through ambiguous technical decisions and establish front-end engineering standards and best practices. This position offers the opportunity to drive a new project from inception, growing business value in a rapidly expanding sector of the company. What You'll Do: Collaborate with top engineers at Chewy and the CTO to evolve the architecture of all development efforts. Take responsibility for major components of Chewy’s architecture, including development and operational needs, serving as the go-to engineer for your platform area. Ensure systems are fully CI/CD compliant and develop plans to achieve CI/CD where not yet implemented. Minimize technical debt as a key objective. Participate in hiring, training, mentoring, and growing new talent as Chewy expands rapidly. Drive innovation through rapid prototyping and iterative development. Conduct design and code reviews, promoting engineering rigor and standards. Debug production issues across services and the tech stack. Continuously measure and optimize performance, effectiveness, and uptime of backend services. Set guidelines for evolving development practices and mentor junior engineers. What You'll Need: Bachelor’s Degree (MIS or CS preferred) or equivalent work experience. 10+ years of experience in an object-oriented language such as Java, with relevant experience in Java ecosystem tools like Spring Boot. Hands-on engineering experience with significant coding, framework development, or debugging. Knowledge of professional software engineering practices, including coding standards, code reviews, source control, build processes, testing, and operations. Proficiency in computer science fundamentals—object-oriented design, data structures, algorithms, problem-solving, and complexity analysis. Experience mentoring and training engineering teams on complex technical issues. Strong analytical skills, proven design abilities, and familiarity with design patterns. Experience designing, building, and deploying scalable, highly available systems. Familiarity with modern tools and environments (e.g., JSON API specs, web services, version control, issue tracking). Experience with cloud and orchestration technologies (AWS, Terraform, Ansible, etc.). Willingness to learn deep domain knowledge in retail e-commerce. Position may require travel. Bonus: Experience in e-commerce. Experience with Scrum, XP, or other agile methodologies. Excellent communication skills with technical and business audiences. Experience with data analysis/mining in large-scale database environments.
