Principal Software Engineer

Mission Technologies, a division of HII, is building a pipeline of Principal Software Engineers to support future operations in our Hanover, MD location in a hybrid environment. Mission Technologies is on the frontlines of emerging technologies in national defense. The Principal Software Engineer will support a mission management tool called the Minotaur Mission Processor. Minotaur ingests data from various sensors on manned and unmanned surveillance aircraft to enhance an operator's ability to identify tracks from various on-board sensors, from both sea and land, that is utilized in all branches of the military. Responsibilities would include leading the effort for developing prototype solutions to unaddressed, critical military operational shortfalls through research, conceptualization, design, implementation, and evaluation as a member of an established team that has fielded numerous highly regarded capabilities. Subject areas differ widely over time, but current projects focus on improving the exploitation of airborne sensor data through object tracking, multi-sensor correlation, and operational data display. Essential job responsibilities include designing, developing, documenting, testing, and debugging applications software and systems that contain logical and mathematical solutions. Conducting multidisciplinary research and collaborating with equipment designers and/or hardware engineers in the planning, design, development, and utilization of electronic data processing systems for product and commercial software. Determining computer user needs; analyzing system capabilities to resolve problems on program intent, output requirements, input data acquisition, programming techniques and controls; preparing operating instructions; designing and developing compilers and assemblers, utility programs, and operating systems. Ensuring software standards are met. Possible duties include mentoring a team of engineers to design, integrate, test, and sustain a fully functional implementation of Minotaur into a customer designated platform; research and concept development for solutions to unaddressed, critical military operational shortfalls; system design and software implementation of proof-of-concept prototypes incorporating a variety of engineering disciplines; support prototype evaluation, experimental operations at military facilities, and transitions of capabilities to government; support system integration events on various aircraft during ground and/or flight tests; develop software interfaces to control and collect data from sensors; potential to fly on aircraft to support system integration and train operators; design and implementation of graphical user interfaces to meet customers' demands and needs; willing to travel between 10-20% of the time. Minimum qualifications include 15 years relevant experience with a Bachelor's in a related field; 13 years relevant experience with a Master's in a related field; 10 years relevant experience with a PhD or Juris Doctorate in a related field; or high school diploma or equivalent and 19 years relevant experience. Advanced level of experience with developing C++, Java, and/or JavaScript, or related programming languages. Must have an active US Secret level clearance or higher. Must be willing to work in the Hanover, MD office. Preferred requirements include extensive knowledge of the Minotaur Mission System and/or related predecessor projects such as the Ocean Surveillance Initiative (OSI).
