Position Summary The primary mission of Counseling & Psychological Services (C&PS) is to provide services to students and the university community that support and enhance the education of the whole person, as well as nurture a healthy and productive learning-centered campus environment. All C&PS services are provided and designed to promote academic excellence and retention at SDSU. Counseling & Psychological Services provides, either directly or through collaboration and referral, a variety of counseling services (e.g., individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, short-term psychotherapy), assessment and evaluation, faculty and staff consultation, and professional training/supervision, consistent with the educational mission of the university. C&PS services are conceived and implemented within the context of a systemic, community-based approach. The SDSU learning community is richly diverse. A crucial part of C&PS's ability to work effectively on campus is each individual staff members' demonstrable respect for diversity and ability to effectively work from a cross-cultural perspective with people from a wide range of backgrounds and value systems.

Community based policing is the foundation for successful law enforcement at SDSU. It involves developing long lasting relationships to fight crime and improve the safety and quality of life in our community. This is accomplished through open communication and a focused partnership between the police department and the students/communities we serve.
The University Police Department Social Worker will act as a liaison between diverse and vulnerable populations to promote safety and prevent crime through community engagement and healing. They will research service delivery models and develop best practices for implementation at San Diego State University and its immediate surrounding community, collaborate with external subject matter experts to facilitate awareness trainings for police officers that are culturally responsive, and co-develop outreach activities and programming with clinical providers addressing student mental health. The Social Worker will also work in partnership with the SDSU Police Department Clinician to provide network and community resources linkage for clients as needed.

Education and Experience Two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.
Specialized Skills Required
Understanding of evidence-based practices (EBP) that are suitable to the populations served, e.g., Community Organizing models (Consensus and Direct Action Organizing), Motivational Interviewing (MI)
Demonstrable ability to effectively work from a multicultural perspective with people from a wide range of backgrounds and value systems
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with vulnerable populations such as homeless, substance use, and/or justice-involved populations, or equivalent
Experience working with systems, schools, or universities
Basic understanding of law enforcement's scope of work and the paramilitary environment cultures
Understanding of substance abuse treatment and experience working with individuals with co-occurring disorders (i.e., mental health and substance abuse)
Previous experience collaborating with law enforcement and experience working with Transition Aged Youth (TAY) and/or college students
Experience and knowledge of mental health systems and resources
Experience with research, data collection and analysis, and program evaluation
Experience with communication via social media related to health messaging
Experience with outreach with ethnically and culturally diverse clients and communities; crisis intervention and trauma response debriefing capabilities
Listening/counseling skills
Ability to communicate clearly and collaborate with various groups and campus entities;
Ability to establish effective working collaborations between individuals and groups representing different cultures, interest groups, and/or departments
Knowledge of legal and ethical issues that relate to services in a mental health or health services operation, including confidentiality and privacy
Compensation and Benefits Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,476 per month.
CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,476 - $6,365 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.
