Base salary $110,000 - $125,000 per year Location Requirements The position requires on-site presence at our facilities in the Silver Lake area of Los Angeles when there are educational events there. These are often on weekends and in the evening. Other work can be done from home. Requirements: Current Los Angeles residents, preferably within easy commuting distance of Silver Lake Regular travel for partnership cultivation and organizational representation Physical ability to climb stairs Reliable transportation for weekend and evening local travel About The Position Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Institute and its three historic properties. The Executive Director will be responsible for the professionalization, management, and execution of the Institute’s programs. The Executive Director will act as the chief spokesperson for the Institute and be responsible for building the Institute’s brand. The Executive Director will lead the Institute’s nascent development and fundraising endeavors with an eye toward raising money for additional programming and staff. About The Institute The missions of the Neutra Institute are to preserve and share the Neutra legacy and to celebrate current artful research-based design for people and the planet. The Institute owns and manages three historic Neutra-designed structures in Silver Lake. Two properties are used for educational purposes and some rental income generation. The third property is entirely leased to tenants. The Institute currently has a small, very active Board of Directors. It seeks to professionalize its operations, transition the Board toward a traditional role, and develop a succession plan. The Institute is currently classified as a private foundation but is working to become a private operating foundation. Candidates selected for zoom interviews will be asked on October 6 to provide references and to participate in multiple interview rounds including presentations to board members. We anticipate making a final selection by October 20 with a start date of November 1, 2025. Key Responsibilities Administration Manage the Institute’s day-to-day operation Manage the annual operating budget and individual project budgets that reflect strategic goals; advise the Board on priority expenditures Serve as liaison with Property Manager, and Owner’s Representative, on repair and restoration projects in keeping with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards Work with them to develop a restoration and maintenance plan Act as defacto facilities and events manager Serve as a liaison with the scholar-in-residence at Reunion House, coordinating student residency, tours, guest visitors, and maintenance work Ensure that the Institute complies with good governance practices Prepare annual property tax relief applications for two properties Administer scholar-in-residence program for Reunion House Coordinate management of the Institute’s financial affairs with the Treasurer, bookkeeper, accountant, and investment advisor Board of Directors Work with President and the Board of Directors to staff quarterly board meetings Work with President to coordinate and attend weekly Executive Committee meetings Work with select Board Members and Advisory Board Members who are subject matter experts on design, neuroscience, preservation, education, building science, and environmental psychology Work with the Board and Advisors to build an effective Board composition and recruitment process Work with Board President (Richard Neutra’s son) on the vision and succession plan for the Institute Assist Board Members with prioritizing and strategically reconciling proposed activities with the Institute’s mission Help Board Members transition to a less hands-on, more traditional role Programs and Education Work with Board Member subject matter experts and Advisors to schedule, coordinate, and promote educational programming, exhibits, and tours on architectural history, preservation, design, and neuroscience, virtually and in-person at the office Conduct tours of the Neutra Office and Reunion House, as needed Serve as chief liaison with partner organizations such as the Society of Architectural Historians/Southern California Chapter, VDL House, Friends of Residential Treasures: Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Conservancy, and the Getty Conservation Institute on events Advise the Board on partnerships with other organizations including archival partners, neuroscience professional organizations, and academic, cultural and scientific institutions Open and close Reunion House and the Neutra Office Building before and after educational programs, tours, exhibits, and scholar visits to Reunion House and Neutra Office Manage sign-ups for Institute-sponsored virtual or in-person events Manage and coordinate the creation of and posting of new content to neutra.org with web master. Initiate or facilitate publications and exhibitions Communications Represent the Institute and its dual missions of preserving the Neutra legacy and celebrating artful research-based design for people and the planet Lead tours of Reunion House and the Neutra Office Establish and maintain a social media presence for the Institute that is consistent with its mission Create and manage communications campaigns for events, milestones, and achievements of the Institute using Constant Contact and social media Build awareness of the Institute and its programs and events Fundraising Develop a short- and long-term fundraising and development plan to increase annual Institute revenue, fund the Executive Director position, and support restoration and archival access projects Begin to execute said plan in fiscal year 2026-2027 with the goal of funding a fulltime Executive Director position by fiscal year 2027-2028 Develop donation solicitation materials Manage grant applications and reporting requirements as necessary Create income streams from Neutra name Create income streams from Neutra Intellectual property Desired Skills, Experience, and Qualifications Required Qualifications Be passionate about research inspired design and preserving the Neutra legacy College degree or higher Non-profit management experience Fundraising experience with individuals, foundations, and public agencies Historic preservation knowledge and experience Exceptional oral and written communications skills Ability to handle confidential matters with discretion and diplomacy Ability to manage upwards with the Board of Directors Physical Requirements Must be able to climb stairs frequently Lift up to thirty pounds Use a computer and keyboard Stand, walk, and talk for extended periods of time while giving educational talks and tours
