Dean of Students POSITION SUMMARY: The Assistant Director for Student Engagement & New Student Orientation is a new role within the Residence Life & Student Engagement team of Student Affairs & Resources (StAR). This position is responsible for developing and sustaining practices that support student engagement and leadership across campus. The role provides hands-on leadership in coordinating new student onboarding and orientation programs and collaborates with campus partners to ensure a well-supported transition into the Olin environment. Olin College has a strong culture of student-led programming and activities. The Assistant Director will advise and support student initiatives while identifying opportunities to enhance campus engagement and broaden participation, particularly for students at the margins. As part of a small, collaborative Student Affairs team, the role also contributes to campus programming operations and efforts to strengthen cross-campus partnerships. This is an in-person/on-campus position based in Needham, MA. RESPONSIBILITIES: New Student Programs & Orientation Design, implement, and assess a comprehensive orientation program for new students and families, in collaboration with the Residence Life staff. Coordinate pre-arrival communications and summer transition programming. Coordinate welcome events and ongoing first-year initiatives that support academic and social transition. Collaborate with Academic Affairs to align orientation with academic readiness and community needs. Manage orientation assistant selection, training, and supervision of Orientation Ambassadors (OAs). Develop targeted transition support for students, international students, and other key populations. Assess transition outcomes and use data to enhance program effectiveness. Participate in campus-wide student support, including on-call rotation. Student Activities & Leadership Development Oversee campus-wide student activities, traditions, and signature events. Manage club sports. Support the growth and sustainability of student organizations, including the registration process and compliance. Deliver required trainings, including hazing prevention and organizational policies. Design and implement leadership development programs and peer mentorship opportunities. Provide advising and mentorship to student leaders and organization officers. Manage the student activities budget and coordinate use of campus spaces. Develop co-curricular programming that supports Olin’s mission of experiential, team-based learning. Student Training, Compliance & Development Facilitate training workshops throughout the academic year on leadership, collaboration, conflict resolution, and community norms. Support training initiatives developed by the Dean of Students. Maintain accurate records of student training completion and compliance. Coordinate make-up sessions and follow up with student groups as needed. Ensure adherence to campus policies and risk management protocols. Update and maintain training materials and online resources. Additional Responsibilities Supervise and support student staff involved in programming and leadership. Collaborate with academic departments and campus offices to integrate co-curricular and curricular efforts. Contribute to institutional retention and enrollment efforts through strategic engagement programming. Participate in crisis response and student support initiatives as needed. Foster inclusive environments that celebrate all identities and promote belonging. Contribute to long-range planning for student life initiatives. Other relevant duties as assigned by the Dean of Students. EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, Counseling, or a related field preferred. 3–5 years of progressively responsible experience in student affairs, with direct experience in orientation and student engagement programming. Strong organizational, communication, and facilitation skills. Knowledge of conflict resolution, facilitated dialogue and restorative practices a plus Demonstrated experience in event planning and student leadership development. Comfort with online tools for data tracking, assessment, and communication (e.g., spreadsheets, Microsoft Forms). Familiarity with student development theory and inclusive practices. Experience with compliance, training, and risk management preferred. Commitment to working with a diverse student body in a highly collaborative and innovative campus environment.
