Vice President, Manufacturing and Supply Chain SUMMARY We we are seeking a strategic and execution-focused Vice President of External Manufacturing & Supply Chain to lead our outsourced manufacturing network and end-to-end supply operations. You will be critical to ensuring the reliable, cost-effective, and compliant delivery of our cell and gene therapy products. You will also lead all aspects of drug product and raw material manufacturing at our CDMO partners, manage our global materials supply chain, and own the Sales & Operations Planning (S&OP) process across the enterprise.
This is a full-time hybrid position (3 days a week) in our Somerville – Assembly Row, Massachusetts office. RESPONSIBILITIES External Manufacturing (CDMO Management) Lead and manage drug product and critical raw material manufacturing across a network of global CDMO partners Serve as the primary accountable owner for performance, relationship, and delivery from external manufacturing partners Oversee performance metrics for technical operations, quality interface, capacity planning, batch release, and manufacturing. Establish rigorous governance and oversight to ensure adherence to contractual commitments, regulatory standards, and financial targets Drive cost-of-goods (COGS) optimization and value creation by leading continuous improvement initiatives with CDMO partners and securing favorable contractual terms. Supply Chain Strategy & Operations Own and lead the enterprise S&OP process, integrating commercial forecast, production plans, inventory strategies, and financial targets Oversee planning, procurement, and inventory management of clinical and commercial materials Develop and manage a high-performing team responsible for materials management, logistics, and supply planning Drive integrated supply planning across manufacturing, MSAT, QA, and commercial functions to ensure uninterrupted patient access Lead strategic sourcing, vendor selection, negotiation, and ongoing supplier relationship management for key materials and services Build and maintain a robust supplier base for key raw materials, consumables, and logistics services to support global manufacturing needs Identify and mitigate supplier risk, ensuring continuity of supply and proactive contingency planning Establish vendor performance monitoring frameworks and lead quarterly business reviews with critical suppliers Act as a key member of the CMC Drug Product Team, contributing to the overall CMC and manufacturing strategy Partner closely with Quality, Regulatory, Commercial, Finance, and Technical Development Teams to align operational execution with corporate priorities Foster a high-performance culture, setting clear expectations, developing talent, and enabling team growth QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE 15+ years of experience in supply chain, manufacturing, or CMC roles in the biopharma industry, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role Deep experience managing contract manufacturing and external supply networks, ideally in cell and gene therapy or other complex modalities Proven track record in building and optimizing global supply chains supporting commercial-stage products Strong understanding of GMP compliance, quality systems, and regulatory expectations for advanced therapies Strategic thinker with strong financial acumen and a hands-on, results-driven leadership style Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams, manage complex projects, and influence at all levels of the organization Bachelor’s degree in engineering, life sciences, or supply chain; advanced degree (MBA, MS) preferred bluebird is proud to be an equal opportunity employer, seeking to create a welcoming and diverse environment.
