Overview

The Tax Managing Director is responsible for applying industry-specific knowledge to advise clients on the tax implications of their business activities, evaluating and selecting actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, and serving as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. This role requires identifying potential tax issues, communicating risks and changes in tax policy, and making top-level decisions regarding filing, preparation and resolution of questions from federal/state agencies. The Tax Managing Director is a critical member of the office/region leadership team and will be involved in direct supervision as either a final or secondary reviewer under the partner, and will actively participate in marketing, networking and business development while maintaining client relationships. Job Responsibilities

Tax Compliance

Ensure clients comply with applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens, and ensure firm policies and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM) are followed. Manage engagements to achieve engagement management metrics. Hands-on client service delivery. Oversee overall client service by ensuring adherence to TQM policies (including engagement letters, documentation, etc.).

Research

Identify when research is needed; clearly frame issues to be researched and report the analysis concisely. Identify complex issues for engagement team research and provide research methodology; serve as technical reviewer of WTAs in area of expertise where applicable.

ASC 740-10 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals

Apply Firm policies and TQM regarding FAS 109 and FIN 48; apply technical expertise in income tax provisions related to international tax, valuation allowances, business combinations, and stock-based compensation issues. Review and apply income tax provisions efficiently.

Tax Consulting

Develop, recommend, and implement efficient methods to maximize client benefits, especially by reducing current and future taxes. Combine tax knowledge with business/industry knowledge to recommend solutions and maximize results; apply knowledge of multiple tax specialties (International, SALT, Estate Planning) for issue identification and resolution.

Tax Specialization

Develop in-depth understanding of technical and practical issues in one or more areas of taxation (e.g., individual, corporate, property, sales, state & local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits and incentives, R&D tax benefits). Possess expert knowledge of standards; be recognized as an industry expert; use expertise to advise clients on tax implications and alternatives.

Strategy Development

Introduce and develop new or improved ideas to improve client position, the Firm, or Firm personnel (e.g., reducing taxes or expenses, or providing non-tax benefits). Depending on the role, may be required to present complex strategies to clients and prospective clients.

Other duties as required Supervisory Responsibilities

Ability to supervise associates, senior associates and managers as the situation dictates. Reviews work prepared by associates and senior associates and provides review comments. Acts as a Career Advisor to associates, senior associates and managers. Schedules and manages workload of associates, senior associates and managers. Provides verbal and written performance feedback to associates, senior associates and managers. Education, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Bachelors degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics preferred. Masters in Accountancy or Taxation preferred. Ten (10) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting/professional services experience required. Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties preferred; prior supervisory experience required. CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (EA) required; other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role preferred. Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite; experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred. Superior verbal and written communication skills; ability to delegate work; strong analytical, research and decision-making skills; capacity to work well in a team; ability to develop and manage a team of tax professionals; ability to compose written tax advice; ability to maintain client relationships; executive presence to present issues and resolutions to clients.
