A Day in the Life of a Principal Engineer
You will lead and mentor an interdisciplinary team to deliver multimodal transportation infrastructure across varied contexts—from urban street reconstructions and streetscapes to trail projects in suburban and rural areas that highlight the natural environment. You will supervise production work in AutoCAD as needed, manage projects through design development, design review, bid package development, permitting, and construction questions, and ensure high-quality outcomes across projects. You will independently manage and lead company projects in the Northeast, engaging with clients and colleagues from multiple disciplines and participating in business development and quality initiatives. Responsibilities
Lead and mentor an interdisciplinary design team to deliver multimodal transportation projects. Manage projects through design development, design review, bid package development, permitting, and construction support. Supervise production work in AutoCAD or related software and ensure high-quality construction documents. Engage with clients and colleagues across disciplines; participate in business development and project pursuits. Work with Engineering Group Managers and the Engineering Director in the Northeast to independently manage and lead projects. Contribute to firm quality initiatives and deliver creative solutions to challenging projects. Qualifications
A Professional Engineering license with the ability to obtain in RI and/or MA. A bachelor\'s or master\'s degree in civil engineering, or a relevant field. At least 13 years of relevant engineering experience. Experience serving as a project manager or design lead. Broad knowledge in civil engineering with specific experience in roadway design, drainage design, geometric design, 3D modeling, and accessible public spaces. Interest in multimodal and active transportation design. Experience in managing staff. Proficiency in CAD (AutoCAD or MicroStation) and design software (Civil 3D, GEOPAK or InRoads). Experience managing northeast projects; experience preparing proposals and scope/fees; interest in business development. Desirable qualifications
Exposure to construction management. Experience analyzing and designing stormwater infrastructure; familiarity with HydroCAD or HydroFlow. Experience with rights of way and easement acquisition. Traffic engineering and signal design experience. Advanced multimodal roadway design knowledge and NACTO guidance. Understanding of MUTCD standards at state and federal levels. Experience working on transit projects and transportation planning for bicycle, pedestrian, transit, and Safe Routes to School. Experience in Complete Streets, bikeway, and crossing design; ability to prepare transportation and local agency permit documents. You'll be a great fit if

This full-time role typically operates on a hybrid schedule: about 40 hours per week, with one day per week in the Boston office and the rest remote in Providence, RI.
