Position Title: Residential SUD (Substance Use Disorder) Counselor
Department: Residential Services
Report to: Lead Counselor
Salary Range: $25.00 – $28.50 per hour
Type: Full Time, Non-Exempt, With Weekend Shifts
Position Summary
This is your chance to join a dynamic team of SUD counselors who are keeping some of San Diego’s most vulnerable populations safe and healthy. Stepping Stone of San Diego has been specializing in LGBTQIA+ addiction recovery, mental health and housing programs for 50 years. Our Residential Program houses 31 residents and provides our clients with SUD counseling, peer support, therapy and other wrap-around services that support them in achieving sobriety. Our organization values a low resident-to-counselor ratio so you will carry a caseload of just 5-6 residents. In addition, you will help facilitate weekly processing groups, help clients create relapse prevention plans, and assist them with stabilizing their lives. Please note that this position includes some weekend shifts. Essential Functions
Manage a caseload of up to 5-6 residents, meeting with them a minimum of once a week
Facilitate both individual and group SUD counseling sessions in a residential setting weekly
Conduct SUD assessments for residents
Document, review, and chart progress of residents and complete required paperwork on time
Administer daily Med Calls
Comply with all CalAIMS documentation requirements for ODS-DMC programs.
Conduct and document resident drug screens
Transport residents to and from medical appointments, sober support meetings, and life enrichment activities
Review, approve, and document resident requests for allowable off-site activities
Report issues that endanger the safety or wellbeing of residents or colleagues to the Program Manager
Attend all internal meetings, and complete all trainings as required in a residential setting
Oversee and maintain all confidentiality and privacy standards for protected health information and other information and materials in accordance with agency policies and procedures, and applicable regulations and laws according to HIPAA
Maintain accurate records and documentation, adhering to all DMC standards and agency policies.
Other duties as assigned or necessary to support the program, office and/or the agency
Minimum Qualifications
Maintain active registration through CCAPP, CAADE, or CADTP with completion and certification within 5 years of hire
Assure timely renewal of registration
Current CPR/First Aid Certification (or within 90 days of hire)
ASAM Training (or within 10 days of hire)
Cultural competency and understanding working in the social determinants of health impacting LGBTQI+ communities
Strong verbal communication skills
Ability to work independently and in a group setting
Ability to handle multiple tasks and shifting priorities within a residential setting
Ability to work productively in a fast-paced environment
Ability to complete tasks in a timely manner according to program expectations
Ability to meet deadlines with documentation according to state, county, and program expectations
Ability to work flexible hours - days, nights, and weekends as needed for a residential setting
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
Preferred Qualifications
1 to 2 years’ experience serving residents in a human services setting
Previous experience working in an SUD residential program setting
Experience with Smartcare and/or other forms of electronic health records
Experience with Optum – SUDPOH county forms used for SUD documentation
Written and spoken bilingual fluency in Spanish and English
Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirement
While primarily working indoors, counselors also work with residents outdoors
Regularly lift 15 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds
Holiday, evening, and weekend work may be required
Transporting residents to and from activities and or appointments
