Overview
Embedded Systems Software Engineer – Edge Robotics role at Nextracker Inc. This position is onsite in Fremont, CA with anticipated day-trip travel to Sacramento, CA once a week.
Responsibilities
Develop Python-based software to control and monitor embedded systems on Jetson platforms
Write ROS2 (Jazzy) nodes to interface with vision, control, and sensor subsystems
Integrate and manage ONVIF and MIPI cameras using GStreamer pipelines
Build Docker containers for deployment to remote Jetson devices
Interface with LTE modems, manage connectivity, and handle data uploads to cloud infrastructure
Develop and maintain client code for API-based communication with remote databases
Collaborate with CV, cloud, and hardware teams to ensure robust end-to-end integration
Required Qualifications
BS or MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering or equivalent
2+ years developing Python-based software to control and monitor embedded systems on Jetson platforms
Python Development for ROS2 Jazzy on Embedded Linux
Python Development for ROS2 Jazzy on Embedded Linux
Clean, modular, and testable Python code for ARM64 Linux systems
Familiarity with concurrency tools (asyncio, threading) for I/O-heavy operations
Experience writing ROS2 nodes, custom messages, service/action servers, and launch configurations
Camera Integration
ONVIF IP camera control and streaming (Python + GStreamer or ffmpeg)
GStreamer pipelines for multiple simultaneous video streams
Optional experience with MIPI CSI-2 and V4L2
AWS IoT Integration
Use of Greengrass for edge function/container deployment, S3 for storage
Auth via Cognito, IAM roles, or embedded credentials
Docker and DevOps for Edge
Building, running, and debugging Docker containers on Jetson platforms
Bash scripting for device setup, monitoring, and lifecycle management
Familiarity with Jetpack SDK, systemd, and logging tools
Database and API Communication
Writing robust clients to communicate with RESTful APIs
Data serialization, payload structuring, and retry logic
Direct or indirect interaction with PostgreSQL systems
Preferred Qualifications
Field robotics deployment experience
Experience with edge telemetry, log compression, and backpressure handling
Familiarity with secure credential storage (e.g., AWS IoT Greengrass Secrets Manager)
Monitoring and testing frameworks (pytest, Prometheus, node_exporter)
