Complex & Specialty Trial Attorney - California
Farmers Insurance is seeking an experienced Attorney with significant jury trial experience to handle cases throughout California. Candidates in Northern California preferred. This is a fully virtual position, with court appearances in-person as required. Workplace: Remote Overview
Responsible for competent, ethical, and diligent representation of clients in high-complexity/exposure cases (typically with injuries and damages valued over $1,000,000). May assist in handling cases assigned to other attorneys. Participates in mentoring and training of colleagues and claims partners. May assist in late-stage litigation or case handling in other attorneys' portfolios. Cases may involve all areas of insurance litigation including personal injury, workers' compensation, subrogation, and personal injury protection. Responsibilities Handle all aspects of defending an inventory of cases from assignment to conclusion. Manage client relationships: initial contact, case status updates, evaluation and strategy throughout the case. Provide advice and recommendations to clients on liability, damages, and case value. Draft legal documents (pleadings, written discovery, motions, briefs). Prepare for and conduct litigation events (hearings, depositions, mediations, arbitrations, settlement conferences, trials, and appeals).
Case Management
Manage a complete inventory of cases and prioritize work across all cases. Identify potential defenses and strategies to defend clients/cases. Conduct legal research, investigation, discovery, and analysis of relevant facts, materials, case law, and statutes. Identify, retain, and consult with experts. Prepare clients, witnesses, and experts for depositions, arbitrations, and trials. Maintain case diaries and litigation support systems to meet deadlines and reporting guidelines. Review documents and evidence to support recommendations, evaluations, and strategy.
Communication
Provide effective and timely communications to clients and claims partners on status, strategy, and evaluation of each case. Keep supervisor informed of work performed and any problems encountered. Professionally communicate with clients, courts, witnesses, co-counsel, opposing counsel, and colleagues. Maintain confidentiality and adhere to company policies and procedures.
Other duties as assigned. Qualifications
Education : Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school; member in good standing of the State Bar where the position is located. Experience : Minimum of 10 years in high-exposure and complex litigation, including at least 5 years handling larger-exposure matters. Requires a background including at least 20 trials to verdict (with at least 15 as first chair in highly complex or catastrophic cases), 25 direct examinations of medical/technical experts, and 2 years of experience in the insurance industry or with insurance claims. Special Skills : Extensive knowledge of procedural and substantive law; superior skills in trial advocacy, public speaking, strategy, negotiations, depositions, expert witnesses, damages, analysis/evaluation, and client service. Benefits Competitive salary commensurate with experience and location. CA salary range: $152,880 - $243,540.
