Overview
Director, External Communications (Hybrid) – AAA National. The Director, External Communications develops and executes integrated communication strategies across all AAA, Inc. Media Channels. This role is responsible for strategic communication planning, managing priorities, and ensuring high-quality external communications aligned with the Association's Strategic Plan. Responsibilities include developing strategies to engage new segments, managing crisis communications, and providing support for multiple advocacy and business issues. The Director also leads advisory groups, collaborates with business leaders, and oversees media monitoring. Duties & Responsibilities
Develops and executes an integrated national communication strategy for the organization. Leads a team of media relations managers who are responsible for generating visibility for AAA's key priorities in automotive, travel, and traffic safety. Leads strategic communication planning in alignment with the Association's Strategic Plan. Partners with AAA, Inc. leaders and club executives serving on governance bodies, including the Public Affairs Committee, business line subcommittees, and advisory groups. Directs ongoing updates to and executes crisis communications strategy. Works closely with internal teams and clubs in real-time to mitigate risk and/or damage to the brand. Advises AAA, Inc. CEO and senior leadership on recommended crisis communication responses. Directs external communications strategies and implements tactics coordinated across multiple media channels to establish AAA, Inc.'s relevance with new market segments. Leads advisory groups in areas of responsibility to guide and inform visibility strategy and implementation at the local level. Provides communication support and external communication expertise to clubs, AAA, Inc. business departments, and senior management. Manages the external communications calendar and ensures alignment with other communications and business priorities. Serves as a national corporate spokesperson for AAA and prepares subject matter experts and executive leadership for interviews with the national media on a variety of association issues. Supervises work output, performance, and conduct of one or more Associates in alignment with AAA's ethical standards. Provides feedback, coaching, and mentorship to promote growth, development, and a positive work culture. Requirements, Competencies, and Certifications
Direct external communications campaigns and garner national media coverage. Determine newsworthy events and exercise judgment in prioritizing coverage. Excellent writing, public speaking, crisis communication, and professional external communication techniques. Gathers insights and diverse perspectives from others to get to an outcome that the majority can support. Furthers the strategic vision of the association by aligning daily actions to the initiatives and goals of the business. Strong operational knowledge of digital, social media, and mobile communications as well as traditional approaches. Knowledge of industry and market trends and the ability to think innovatively and strategically. Strong leadership and team building skills, well organized, well informed, capable of leading by influence, and able to achieve desired goals and objectives while maintaining the respect and support of the organization. Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and the ability to think conceptually and effectively communicate direction to associates and business departments. Knowledge of emerging media and strategies to optimize messages for different channels and audiences. Ability to direct the conceptualization, development, and implementation of image-enhancing external communications programs. Deep understanding of press relations, social media, public affairs, crisis communications management, and the importance of representing the company dynamically. Ability to solve problems and think of the big picture while not losing sight of immediate pending deadlines. Strong National Media Network and relationships preferred. Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree in journalism, Public Relations, or a related field and seven (7) to ten (10) years of experience in journalism or public relations required. Five (5) to seven (7) years of experience creating and executing strategic communications plans. Job details

$109,700 - $138,220 This position is also eligible for participation in AAA, Inc.'s Annual Incentive Plan. AAA, Inc. is committed to paying competitively and equitably. The posted range for this position represents competitive compensation based on market data, internal equity, and the skills and requirements of the position.
