Responsibilities The Highway & Roads Market Sector Director leads HDR's Highway & Roads (H&R) market sector, the largest in the company, representing nearly $1B in annual revenue globally. The H&R market sector includes clients that own and operate highways, toll roads, city, town and local roads, and bridge structures. The primary professional services include bridge and highway design, traffic engineering, transportation planning and tolling services.

The primary responsibilities are divided into three areas:

Market leadership and business development (approximately 70%)

Staff development (approximately 20%)

Support to Operations (approximately 10%)

The Market Sector Director sets the vision for HDR’s growth in the market sector and, in partnership with region and area business group leadership, supports growth initiatives and staff development to achieve market sector targets for bookings, revenue and profit. The Director coordinates with business group leadership, operations leadership, client managers, practice group leaders and other stakeholders to implement growth plans. The position reports to the Transportation Business Group (TBG) Market Strategy Director and maintains regular communication with regional leadership to implement strategic plans at the market sector level.

HDR has ongoing contracts with state departments of transportation and with towns, counties and cities in the US, with ongoing expansion into Canada, the UK, the Middle East and Australia. Our H&R professionals engage with clients to deliver bridge and highway design, traffic and transportation planning, construction management, and HDR services across advisory, environmental, strategic communications, facilities and more. The Director is responsible for supporting area business development and client management, and for defining and implementing growth initiatives, coordinating best practices and HDR’s brand in the marketplace. This role engages a wide spectrum of employees and reinforces HDR’s image with clients and markets.

Business Development Responsibilities The Market Sector Director leads the organization to gain market share and to interface with local area client development programs and area business development leads to:

Oversee the creation and implementation of a strategic vision and direction for the market sector, aligning technical and professional services with business group and operations leadership.

Serve as the Client Manager for selected key clients within the market sector.

Engage in selected projects as Principal-In-Charge.

Promote HDR services to clients within the market sector with client managers.

Participate as a member of the Transportation Business Group Management Team.

Work with Regional Business Group Directors on area goals and market sector initiatives.

Collaborate with client managers and business development leaders to drive client development and pursuit processes using proven capture techniques.

Support area and strategic pursuits through client relationships and pursuit activities.

Participate in industry associations at a leadership level and serve as a company role-model in business and community organizations.

Identify key investments (acquisitions and technology) to maintain HDR’s position as an industry leader.

Monitor marketing capabilities and ensure the market sector collaborates with departments to achieve goals.

Develop relationships with industry counterparts in other consulting organizations.

Develop and maintain relationships with senior leadership in key client organizations.

Lead HDR’s presence and representation with industry organizations in the US, Canada, EMEA and APAC (e.g., AASHTO, IBTTA, NASTO, SASHTO, WASHTO and others) and pursue strategic partnerships where appropriate.

Staff Development Responsibilities

Assume responsibility for Global Market Sector P&L in coordination with local area managers.

Coordinate with business class directors to drive technical excellence and coordinate staff to support project delivery and marketing efforts.

Coordinate staffing and recruiting plans for key hires and assist local leadership with hires.

Approve all key/strategic hires in the market sector.

Participate in Annual Performance Conversations for key market sector leaders.

Support to Operations The Market Sector Director assists Regional Business Group Directors and area managers in delivering professional services for area projects. Responsibilities include driving client management, monitoring market sector profit and loss, reviewing staff assignments, encouraging work-sharing, ensuring project delivery, and supporting the QA/QC program.

Monitor market sector performance indicators (NFE/NFB, profit, unbilled revenue, AR, losses, investments); manage workload and facilitate work sharing; promote effective use of resources and apply staff expertise to area projects.

Assist with contract review on key projects to ensure risk management, proper staffing, quality reviews and claims resolution. Promote Quality Assurance/Quality Control and collaborate with leadership to support marketing and project activities. Foster dissemination of lessons learned.

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum 20 years’ experience in planning/engineering in highway design or bridge design

Professional engineering license or equivalent

Current or past leadership positions within highway/road industry associations including AASHTO, IBTTA and other similar organizations globally

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Engineering or closely related field

A minimum of 12 years industry experience including leadership

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Strong skills in client management, client development and a documented history of growing/leading a practice

Strong business skills; specifically handling budgets, staff and operational issues

Strong ability to analyze the marketplace and strategically position HDR

The expected compensation range for this position depends upon skills, experience, education and geographical location. (Stated benefits are for full-time regular positions.
