– San Diego State University. The Fowler College of Business (FCB) at SDSU is seeking an

Academic Advisor

to join the Center for Student Success (CSS). CSS serves over 8,000 undergraduate students and provides academic advising, student support, and programming that enhances student achievement and timely graduation. The Academic Advisor will support a caseload of students and contribute to college-wide student success initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Academic Advising: Advise current, prospective, and former students on course planning, degree progress, and university policies.

Support At-Risk Students: Counsel students experiencing academic difficulty and connect them with appropriate campus resources.

Student Engagement: Facilitate group advising sessions, orientation programs, and student success workshops.

Coordinated Care Participation: Collaborate with SDSU’s Coordinated Care Advising network for integrated student support.

Event Support: Assist with key events such as orientation and commencement; occasional evening/weekend hours required.

Position Information

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position.

This position is designated as exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Education And Experience Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown below may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. Possession of the required knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Key Qualifications

Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and adapt to evolving procedures or situations requiring initiative and creative thinking.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and to communicate clearly with groups of varying sizes.

Strong problem-solving and interpersonal skills, including the ability to handle sensitive or complex student concerns with empathy and professionalism.

Knowledge of general education, degree requirements, or graduation processes in higher education, with the ability to learn institution-specific policies.

Familiarity with academic advising practices and working within a college or university environment.

Experience providing student services or support in a higher education setting (admissions, advising, evaluations, or registrar functions) is preferred.

Experience explaining and interpreting academic policies governing a public or private university in various communication modes (in person, on the phone, via Zoom or email) is preferred.

Experience using student information systems, degree evaluation tools, or academic advising platforms, with the ability to quickly learn new technologies is preferred.

Compensation And Benefits Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $5,083 per month. Salary placement is determined by education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.
