Deputy Prosecuting Attorney (Term-Limited) — District Court Unit, Mainstream Criminal Division, Maleng Regional Justice Center, Kent. The Mainstream Criminal Division of the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office is seeking highly motivated attorneys with a commitment to justice, integrity, compassion, leadership, and professionalism to join our office as term-limited Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys in the District Court Unit. These are excellent opportunities to develop expertise and gain courtroom experience, particularly for new and less experienced attorneys. Initial assignment at the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent; deputies cover work at courthouses in Seattle, Kent, and Redmond and must be able to work at any location. Assigned to the District Court Unit handling gross misdemeanor cases; develop skills as a trial lawyer and negotiator; align with the office mission to do justice. Manage a large caseload; exercise sound judgment; join a community of Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys and Legal Service Professionals committed to integrity and excellence. General work hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; court hours 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; occasional weekend or holiday calendar coverage. Other assignments include assisting with mainstream felony filings and covering felony calendars. Contract details
Term-Limited DPA contracts last 12 months with the possibility of extension and come with the same benefits package as non-contract employees. The 12-month term serves as a probationary period to assess fit. Positions are primarily in-person with some telecommuting allowed as business needs permit. A County-issued laptop is provided; employees must have a reliable workspace and internet connection and be available during scheduled hours. Residence in Washington state and proximity to a King County worksite are required to respond to workplace reporting requirements. Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
Strong legal research, writing, and analytical abilities. Strong work ethic and ability to work effectively in a team. Commitment to race, equity, and social justice issues, including developing personal cultural competency. Willingness to learn trial skills and to receive and apply feedback. Must be Washington State Bar qualified or planning to take the July 2025 bar exam. Special Requirements
Member in good standing with the Washington State Bar. Able to work at Seattle, Kent, and Redmond locations; initial assignment in Kent. Must submit to a criminal history check, including fingerprinting. Must be a citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States (per RCW 36.27 and 29A.04 and Article VI of the Washington State Constitution). Salary
$89,416 - $118,237+ annually, commensurate with experience. Application Process
