Overview The HVAC Engineer carries out daily operations, repair, and maintenance of the facility’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. This includes managing the building automation system to manage assets and create diagnostic reports. The role also services refrigeration components and maintains the carbon monoxide monitoring system. The candidate must be highly motivated, detail oriented, results-driven, and able to work collaboratively with staff at all levels throughout the organization. This person can manage multiple priorities and switch between responsibilities as needed. The position collaborates with various internal departments to understand and fulfill the organization’s material and service requirements. This is a union position with Operating Engineers Local 501, AFL-CIO. Schedule is determined by seniority and open availability may be required.

What You Will Do

Maintains and repairs all HVAC equipment and components to manufacturer recommendations (valves, motors, belts, bearings, filters, lubrication, etc.).

Installs, rebuilds, and replaces fans, motors, VFDs, thermostats, fuses, filters, bearings, valves, controls, gaskets, and other equipment as necessary.

Manages boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, and HVAC units through a centralized building automation system (Metasys).

Monitors and treats open/closed water loop systems using test kits and appropriate chemicals.

Calibrates electrical and pneumatic control devices.

Repairs refrigeration units and components (condensing units, drain lines, fan motors, etc.).

Performs regular preventive maintenance inspections of refrigeration units, pumps, and heating/ventilation units; replaces filters, lubricates bearings, inspects belts, refills refrigerant, and cleans coils.

Conducts diagnostic assessments to identify root causes of malfunctions and completes necessary repairs.

Documents work and assets in the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).

Verifies work conforms to applicable building standards and codes; inspects contractor work for compliance.

Identifies and corrects unsafe conditions with management oversight.

Maintains tools and equipment and follows maintenance procedures, including preventative and corrective tasks.

Attends training programs and complies with safety and risk management policies and procedures.

Reports accidents and injuries promptly and participates in safety meetings and hazard assessments.

Applies OSHA and local safety requirements; reviews inventory to ensure adequate stock of common items.

Maintains a safe and clean work environment and may perform other duties as assigned.

What You Will Need

High School Diploma or GED and successful completion of a craft apprenticeship or journeyman-level training with three years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Valid California driver’s license (or valid license from the state of residency for non-residents).

Ability to read and interpret building drawings, specifications, schematics, and other reference materials.

Knowledge of building automation and refrigeration systems is preferred.

Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills; ability to explain technical information clearly.

Ability to perform calculations and work with various measurements; analyze problems and devise solutions.

Comfort with working in varying environments and with potential hazards; willingness to use PPE and follow safety procedures.

Physical ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds; ability to work at elevated platforms and in confined spaces.

Hours may include a split shift; the San Diego Convention Center operates 24/7 and hours may extend beyond standard shifts.
