Job Summary The Marathon Martinez Renewable Facility has an opening for a Project Refining Engineer. This assignment as a Project Engineer is an excellent opportunity to gain experience managing projects in a renewable fuel facility. The main responsibility is to provide project leadership and technical direction through all phases of a project from initial development to successful and safe construction and startup. The position requires interfacing with other departments in the plant, engineering contractors, equipment vendors, and construction contractors. The successful candidate will be a self-directed and motivated individual with some understanding of project management and the types of equipment typical to a refinery or petrochemical plant. This person reports to the Martinez Engineering Manager. The available schedules for the position are 9/80, 5/40 or 4/1; after-hours calls are required several times per year, with TAR support once per year.
Key Responsibilities
Apply project management and engineering skills and knowledge in all phases of projects from conception to closeout.
Manage multiple projects and assignments in a timely, safe, and cost-effective manner.
Interact with project team members and stakeholders to ensure that project scope is clearly defined and meets end-user requirements.
Develop decision support packages (DSPs) for assigned projects, which include a project’s objective, scope, schedule, benefits/justification, options, and costs.
Present DSPs to management to obtain approval and funding.
Manage and provide direction to engineering contractors.
Initiate and participate in management of change (MOC) reviews for applicable projects.
Review design drawings, construction packages, and specifications and coordinate input from stakeholders.
Participate in technical reviews with operations, construction, engineering firms and equipment suppliers.
Ensure assigned projects comply with Marathon and other refining industry specifications and standards.
Collaborate with project controls for project scheduling, estimating, cost management, and monthly updates to the cost forecast.
Coordinate with procurement in development of contracting plans including engineering services and equipment sourcing.
Maintain accurate and current project documentation.
Support construction and commissioning of assigned projects through field walks, responding to RFIs, and approving installations before turnover to operations.
Provide documentation and support to Operations and Maintenance to develop start-up manuals, operating and maintenance procedures, and equipment training.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Instrumentation, or Electrical Engineering. Degree must be ABET-accredited and completed prior to start date.
At least 3 years of post-degree engineering experience in a refinery, petrochemical, or related heavy industry.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Ability to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator), perform field tasks, and pass hair drug test and physical.
Valid driver’s license.
Legal authorization to work in the US without VISA sponsorship.
Travel requirement is 5% or less.
Available schedules: 9/80, 5/40 or 4/1; after-hours calls are required several times per year and TAR support once per year.
