Job Description and Duties Under the direction of the Supervising Transportation Surveyor, t he Branch Chief – Field Surveys – under the direction of the Supervising Transportation Surveyor, plans, organizes, supervises and directs the work of regional office staff assigned to a variety of surveying related projects throughout the North Region and District 04 or as needed. Acts as the liaison between Surveys and other Caltrans Functional units, Headquarters, other public agencies, and the general public.

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Senior Transportation Surveyor (Caltrans) exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Working Conditions Position information and working conditions described by the department may apply. Incumbent may be required to sit for long periods of time while driving, during meetings or using a keyboard. Requires ability to get large survey objects moved to and from a vehicle or storage area which may weigh in excess of 25 pounds. Must have the ability to stay calm during employee confrontations. Incumbent must be able to clearly evaluate the work of others without personal bias. Analytical skills are also required in project analysis. Mental/Emotional: Must possess the ability to work independently, effectively, and efficiently to coordinate multiple assignments and tasks. Must possess the ability to work under pressure. Must be able to analyze raw data, reason logically, recognize problems and develop solutions, and make recommendations for improvement and simplification. The work of the incumbent is detailed, complex, and variable and requires independent action and decision-making.
