Position Summary: Performs semi-skilled work in support of Authority operations. Workers may be assigned to water distribution, sewage collection, or plant operations, typically working as members of a crew engaged in construction, maintenance, and repair activities. Employees operate automotive and/or mechanical equipment relating to the completion of the above tasks. Experienced workers follow through on matters, and use independent judgment and training to take appropriate actions to deal with standard recurring situations. As Assigned Responsibilities
Works as part of a crew to assist in the maintenance, repair, and construction of water and sewer lines to include mains and service lines. Assists in maintaining, inspecting, and reducing infiltration and inflow into the sanitary sewer collection system. Duties include providing services for sewer main excavation, repair and new installations; sewer manhole maintenance and repair and installations; sewer main easement maintenance; sewer main flushing and root removal as well as numerous other general water and sewer work. Assists in locating sewer lines. Participates in the inspection and flushing of sanitary sewer mains. Operates flushing equipment, collects, and disposes debris from flushing operation. Manually installs equipment into manholes and system, sets up and operates winches. Rehabilitates manholes including inspection, grouting, parging, and resetting frames and covers and installing inflow inserts. Repairs and replaces caps. Assists homeowners, and contractors to locate and identify problems and structural failures and defects. Responds to customer needs and requests and investigates problems. Sets up and performs safe traffic control of personnel and equipment while performing duties in streets and roadways. Participates in inspecting all new sanitary sewer systems to ensure construction is in compliance with standards and specifications. Repairs, replaces, and installs sanitary water and sewer connections, lines (mains and laterals) and related facilities including unstopping sanitary sewer lines (main and laterals). Monitors sewer systems. Performs miscellaneous maintenance duties. Sets forms, pours concrete and assists in finishing concrete sidewalks. Inspects, repairs and paints fire hydrants, and miscellaneous structures and equipment. Assists in the daily maintenance, repair, and upkeep of all equipment used in the performance of duties. Maintains shop area and shop equipment. Operates a variety of automotive and mechanical equipment in connection with the above tasks; Operates dump trucks, pickup trucks, service trucks, flushing trucks, loaders/backhoes, loads and unloads dirt, gravel, and other materials as required. Operates riding and push mowers, cuts and trims grass, seeds and maintains sewer or water line right-of-ways as required. Acts as a yard attendant disbursing fuel, supplies and materials as required including yard cleanup. Other Duties: Repairs structures other than sewer systems, i.e., buildings, vaults, and wetwells. Restores areas disturbed by digging. Monitors sewer flows during high infiltration periods. Assists in location and verification of sanitary sewer systems. Performs related work as required. Qualifications
Knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of common automotive and mechanical equipment; traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; basic construction and maintenance procedures; occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions involved in equipment operation. Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, occasionally under unfavorable weather conditions; to communicate effectively; to work cooperatively with others. Completion of the tenth school grade. Valid CDL operator's license or obtain within 90 days. Physical Demands and Work Environment
The work is regularly active with periods of heavy exertion, and is performed in shop or field settings and outside. Typical positions require workers to walk or stand for long periods; lift and carry up to 60 pounds; climb stairs, ladders and scaffolding; bend, kneel, crouch and crawl; reach, hold, grasp and turn objects; feel the size, shape and temperature of items; and operate computer or typewriter keyboards. The work requires the ability to speak normally, to use normal or aided vision and hearing, and to detect odors. Required to be scheduled for regular on call after hours, weekend or holiday emergency response. Employees are exposed to dirt and soil; unpleasant odors; working outside in hot and humid conditions, or in inclement weather; and to hazards in the work environment.
