Material Handler

This role involves working primarily indoors, with some outdoor tasks, to assist machine operators by transporting steel materials and removing finished beams using an overhead crane. The position requires labeling steel, pairing materials for welders, cleaning parts, and rigging materials with cranes for movement. General labor duties will also be assigned as needed.

Responsibilities
  1. Transport steel materials to machine operators and remove finished beams using an overhead crane.
  2. Label and mark steel materials for welders.
  3. Clean parts and rig materials with cranes for movement.
  4. Assist in unloading flatbed trailers and preparing them for transport.
  5. Operate a forklift for material transport, if not already skilled.
  6. Walk, stand, and bend for 8-10 hour shifts.
  7. Manage inventory systems using computers and manual pick tickets.
  8. Verify loads, weight, and materials for delivery and shipment.
Essential Skills
  • Experience in material handling, shipping and receiving, and inventory management.
  • Ability to operate forklifts and overhead cranes.
  • 3-5 years of experience in manufacturing or distribution.
  • 1 year of experience in heavy industry or outdoor work.
  • Capability to read a tape measure for cross-training purposes.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience in heavy industry, construction, or general labor.
  • Knowledge of packaging, sheet metal, and logistics.
  • Exposure to various weather conditions and ability to perform physical work.

Work Environment

Work in a very nice, brand new, well-lit facility equipped with CNC saws and welders. The environment may have weld dust but is generally clean. The facility is not climate-controlled, so expect hot summers and cold winters. It operates as an open-air steel fabrication and distribution site with a schedule from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Petersburg, Virginia.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
