The work you will do:

  • Perform a variety of roadway maintenance activities on state roads throughout Polk County, including pothole repairs, shoulder work, tree trimming, sidewalk repairs, emergency response, etc.
  • The equipment operator supports the safety and functionality of Florida's transportation system through hands-on fieldwork and dependable service.

Your specific responsibilities:

  • Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; checks and adds fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc.
  • Cleans and washes equipment.
  • After obtaining the required Instructional CDL permit or license, vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment that may include but not limited to; dump truck, front end loader, skid steer loader, grader, lift equipment, small bulldozer and asphalt repair truck while performing bridge and roadway maintenance.
  • Supervises Department of Corrections inmates crew performing maintenance activities.
  • Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways.
  • Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Performs tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
  • Assists with crew activity reports as needed.

The successful candidate will have the following required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Knowledge of mathematical calculations.
  • Knowledge of standard safety rules and procedures.
  • Skilled in operating a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Skilled in operating and performing minor maintenance on small/medium equipment and vehicles.
  • Ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms.
  • Ability to maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds; stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.
  • Ability to work independently; stand for an extended period of time.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Requires one year of experience operating small/medium equipment and vehicles.
  • A Class E driver's license is required at time of hire.
  • A CDL Class B License Instructional Permit is required within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.

Other job-related requirements:

  • Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies and be "on-call" (24-hour duty) when necessary.
  • The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
  • Employee will be required to be responsive to emergency situations within a very short timeframe and serve in the Transportation Emergency Management Team (TEMT).
