Highway Maintenance Equipment Operator

Maintains highways and facilities through activities such as repairs, resurfacing, mowing, and snow and ice control. This position is a member of a sub-area crew, which normally maintains all KDOT facilities in an approximate one county area and when needed maintains other KDOT facilities in other counties within the State of Kansas. Duties include operation of light and medium duty equipment regularly and heavy equipment occasionally as necessary. Duties include performing a variety of manual labor type tasks.

1. 20% E Operates miscellaneous maintenance equipment such as chain saws, weedeaters, pumps, compressors, jackhammers, generators, power tools, and uses various hand tools.

2. 15% E Operates dump trucks, small and medium sized loaders, mowers, tractors, rollers, power brooms to perform various maintenance tasks.

3. 15% E Performs manual labor to setup and remove temporary traffic control for maintenance work zones and serves as a flag person to route traffic around work crews.

4. 10% E Performs manual labor associated with various maintenance activities.

5. 10% E Performs preventative maintenance and minor repair work on equipment.

6. 10% E Operates a loader, or truck-mounted plow and spreader in snow and ice control operations.

7. 05% E Mixes various materials for use in snow and ice operations including salt and sand mix and salt brine.

8. 05% E Operates trucks and trailers to transport equipment and materials. Performs other miscellaneous assigned tasks.

During emergency situations, the EO is expected to report to duty within a reasonable time of proper notification and work for extended periods of time (12 hour shifts). The work is reviewed by the Maintenance Supervisor and/or the EO Specialist. Generally, work is reviewed for compliance with maintenance standards, procedures, safety requirements, and quality. Due to the nature of the work, incumbent may/will be required to work additional hours when needed, including nights and weekends. Additional hours will be assigned by the supervisor depending upon the needs of the agency.

Please give examples. Loss of time generally would affect others on the crew. A mistake in signing could result in loss of property and be life threatening. Improper use of equipment results in down time and repair cost.

For what purpose, with whom and how frequently are contacts made with the public, other employees, or officials? Contacts are usually limited to other KDOT employees other than contact with the public when flagging traffic. Daily: Dump truck, pickup, loader, tractor mower Occasionally: Air compressors, rollers, porta-patchers, crack sealing machine, power hand tools, and other hand tools Seasonally (As Needed): Snow and ice removal equipment For more specific information on equipment used regularly please see Section 28.
