Position Summary:

We will be creating a new Native Plant Propagation Lab this Fall. We will begin to plant and culture native plants for MIU to use in campus landscaping projects going forward. These positions will be part of the MIU Sustainability initiative and will involve building and creating planting boxes as well as seed harvest, cleaning seeds, planting, watering plants, etc. In the winter, attention can turn more toward energy conservation for MIU and helping to educate the campus community about the value of native plants as well as developing plans for native plant landscaping projects on campus. We will create a new lab and offer MIU thousands of native plants to use in campus landscaping! This project will help us begin to Rewild Campus.

Experience Gained / Advantages for Student: Understanding how native plants benefit the entire ecosystem Hands on experience and knowledge of all aspects of Native Prairie plants Creating a lasting native landscaping for MIU Having a complete understanding of the life cycle of native plants is a useful skill. Working on this project will give students a chance to work on a sustainable project, from inception and planning, all way though the implementation phase to actually using the plants in landscaping projects around campus. Students will also gain skills managing community volunteers who wish to help with this project. Job Responsibilities:

Gathering native plant seeds around Jefferson County Creating a lab and planting boxes Planting and tending seeds in planting trays Helping to design landscaping projects on campus using native plants

Job Qualifications:

An interest in native prairie plants A desire to be outside this fall gathering seeds Practical people who like working with their hands to sort and plant seeds Good taking care of plants

Science Wing Plant Propagation Lab (to be created and set up by students)
