Exempt, Non-Merit, Full-Time with Benefits GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE ASSISTANT CITY PROSECUTOR
This position prosecutes violations of criminal law and traffic regulations within Ogden City. Cases are filed in the Ogden City Justice Court. This position also handles de novo appeals with the Utah Second District Court. The assistant city attorney receives direction from the city attorney and the city prosecutor. Assistant City Prosecutor Job Functions
Represent the City of Ogden in various criminal and traffic cases; research courtroom evidence; summon witnesses and negotiate pleas; attend morning video arraignments. Prosecute civil remedies to enforce city ordinances, abate public nuisances, recover damages to city property, and condemn property for public purposes and other matters. Review police reports and screen for possible cases with Police Officers; determine the number of offenses to be filed and develop case evidence. Train and assist Police Officers with law enforcement issues. Research legal questions and evaluate the impact on city policies and procedures. Appear in court and administrative proceedings to represent the city's interests as required. Coordinate office activities with those of other departments, outside agencies, and organizations; provide staff assistance to the City Attorney; prepare and present staff reports and other necessary correspondence. Participate in safety and risk management activities; take action to reduce liability to the city. Attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this position. Employees must work as a team and frequently meet with co-workers and supervisors; employees must communicate in person with the public during office hours; and employees must use on-site equipment. Participate on various boards and commissions; attend and participate in professional groups and committees. Assist with various contract negotiations. Respond to citizen complaints and research possible offenses. Perform other related duties as required/assigned. Education And Experience Requirements
One year of responsible experience in city or related government law, including trial experience. Criminal trial experience is helpful but not necessary. Equivalent to a Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school. An equivalent combination of the above-stated work experience and education is acceptable. Special Requirements
Membership in the State Bar of Utah. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Utah driver's license. Submission of a personal writing sample at the time of application. Employees must complete NIMS IS100 and IS700 within three months of hire. Benefits With Ogden City Employment
