We are seeking a dynamic, mission-driven Executive Director to lead and manage operations, drive member and sponsor engagement, and help the Board achieve its strategic goals.

Job Summary Reporting to the AIA Cleveland Board of Directors, the Executive Director serves as the chapter’s chief administrative officer. This individual is responsible for daily operations, financial management, communications, membership engagement, programming, sponsor relations, and board support. The Executive Director works collaboratively with a dedicated volunteer board and committee chairs to deliver programs and initiatives that reflect the chapter’s mission.
Reports To Board of Directors
Responsibilities Mission and Strategy
Align programming and operations with the chapter’s mission and strategic goals
Collaborate with the Board to define and implement strategic priorities
Evaluate the effectiveness of chapter initiatives and recommend enhancements
Board Partnership
Serve as the liaison to the Board
Coordinate Executive Committee and Board meetings, including agenda development and reporting
Assist with board development, governance practices, and succession planning
Participate in the Annual Board Retreat and maintain the Board Introduction Packet
Communications and External Relations
Maintain brand standards and manage internal and external communications
Promote chapter events, initiatives, and member benefits through marketing and outreach
Cultivate partnerships with AIA National, allied organizations, sponsors, and the community
Refine and assess communication strategies on an annual basis
Membership Engagement
Act as the primary point of contact for members and prospective members
Support membership recruitment, retention, and outreach in collaboration with Membership Committee
Track and report on membership data, engagement levels, and trends
Ensure that member experience reflects chapter values and priorities
Program Oversight
Partner with committees and board members to develop relevant, accredited programming
Prioritize the chapter calendar to maximize participation and impact
Provide continuity of institutional knowledge and support signature events (e.g., Design Awards, Golf Outing, Boat Cruise, Women in Architecture Celebration)
Develop and manage new initiatives aligned with strategic goals
Fundraising and Financial Management
Collaborate with the Treasurer and Bookkeeper on financial management and recordkeeping
Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning
Maintain sponsor relationships and identify new partnership opportunities
Track revenue streams and event participation for planning and reporting
Ensure timely filing of financial documents and maintain compliance
Operations Management
Manage AIA Contract Document sales and inventory
Maintain compliance with accreditation requirements
Support a collaborative, transparent, and high-functioning work culture
Coordinate with other component Executive Directors for knowledge-sharing and professional development
Qualifications
Proven leadership experience, ideally in a non-profit, membership-based, or professional organization
Strong financial acumen and budgeting experience
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
Strategic thinker with excellent organizational and project management skills
Experience working with volunteers and boards of directors
Knowledge of the architecture or AEC (Architecture, Engineering, Construction) industry is a plus
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree or CAE designation preferred
