Overview The Senior Director of Membership leads the strategic direction, planning, and execution of membership growth, engagement, and retention for the National Small Business Association (NSBA). Reporting directly to the President/CEO, this senior leadership role oversees the Membership Department—including direct supervision of the Manager of Member Outreach and a team of membership sales professionals—and is responsible for expanding NSBA’s national member base, enhancing member experience, and building relationships that support both member value and organizational sustainability. The Senior Director will also work closely with Corporate Partnerships to strengthen and grow strategic alliances that benefit NSBA members.

Provide strategic leadership and oversight of all membership initiatives, including recruitment, engagement, and retention strategies. Supervise and support the Manager of Member Outreach to ensure alignment with organizational goals. Oversee the development and execution of programming for the Leadership Council and other volunteer leadership groups. Evaluate and enhance membership processes and infrastructure, including database management, engagement tracking, and communications. Lead strategic planning efforts for membership growth through data-driven insights and industry benchmarking. Collaborate with the Communications and Public Affairs teams to develop compelling content, campaigns, and touchpoints for members. Build and maintain relationships with corporate partners to foster collaboration and member value through sponsorships, co-branded programs, or special initiatives. Work with internal stakeholders to design programming and policy group engagement that supports NSBA’s broader advocacy goals. Develop and report on membership performance metrics, growth trends, and engagement analytics to internal leadership and the Board. Represent NSBA at external events, conferences, and meetings to promote membership and partnerships. Manage budget planning and resource allocation for the Membership Department. Ensure an inclusive and welcoming member experience that reflects NSBA’s values and mission. Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly supervises the Manager of Member Outreach. May oversee additional staff, consultants, or interns supporting membership operations. Qualifications and Skills
Minimum 5–10 years of experience in membership management, non-profit fundraising, association leadership, business development, or a related field. Proven experience leading and scaling membership or a donor base. Demonstrated success in managing and mentoring staff. Strong understanding of membership database systems (CRM or AMS platforms). Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills. Ability to think strategically, manage multiple priorities, and work across departments. Experience in partnership development and relationship management is highly desirable. Passion for small business advocacy is a plus. Benefits & Compensation NSBA offers competitive compensation commensurate with experience. Salary range: $100,000-$125,000. Work Environment NSBA offers a hybrid work environment. The Vice President of Membership will be expected to be in the office at least three (3) days per week, with remote flexibility on remaining days, subject to the discretion of the President & CEO. Occasional travel may be required for events, meetings, or conferences.
