San José State University is seeking an Admissions Counselor/Recruiter to join our Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Outreach. Reporting to the Sr. Director of Student Outreach and Recruitment (with lead direction from the Assistant Director), this role is responsible for guiding prospective students through the admissions process, recruiting future Spartans, and evaluating applications in compliance with CSU policies and procedures. The Admissions Counselor/Recruiter serves as a primary contact for high school and community college partners, prospective students, and families—providing clear information, resolving issues, and representing SJSU at outreach events both on and off campus.

Responsibilities

Counsel and advise prospective students and families on CSU and SJSU admissions requirements

Build and maintain relationships with high schools, community colleges, and community partners

Evaluate and verify applications for admissibility

Represent SJSU at recruitment events, workshops, and presentations (in person and virtual)

Support the admissions process to ensure accuracy and compliance with policies

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Ability to communicate with constituents in a professional and respectful manner

Excellent oral and written communication skills

Excellent customer service and public relations skills

Knowledge of methods, procedures, practices, and activities of the program area; English grammar, business writing, punctuation, spelling, and arithmetic

Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports

Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive information and communications with students, parents, employees, and external agencies

Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations

Ability to reason logically; ability to collect, compile, analyze, and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on the data

Ability to use professional judgment to review and assess admissions requirements and documents

Ability to advise potential students, parents, high school and community college staff individually and in group settings

Knowledge of technology and software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and communication tools

Ability to learn, implement, and adapt to new virtual platforms for recruitment, college fairs, outreach, and yield purposes

Ability to plan and execute multiple work priorities, organize and plan work and projects

Qualifications Required Qualifications

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field

Two (2) years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field. A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree

Experience working in a higher education enrollment services environment, preferably in admissions, records, and/or evaluations

Experience analyzing and interpreting college/high school transcripts, documents, process requirements and university policies regarding admissions and enrollment

Experience with PeopleSoft, and customer service based technology systems

Excellent written communication skills

Experience in communicating admissions and or student services policies and procedures to community college, university, or high school constituents

Compensation Classification: Student Services Professional II

Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,083/month - $5,336/month

CSU Salary Range: $5,083/month - $7,228/month
