Overview
The Provost is UNC-Chapel Hill's Chief Academic Officer and reports to the Chancellor. The Provost leads the University in its academic strategy, planning, and implementation and upholds academic policies and practices while promoting the wellbeing of faculty and students. The Provost is the chief advocate for faculty, serves as Chair of the Deans’ Council, evaluates deans and vice provosts, and provides strategic management of budgets. The Provost guides the development of an information infrastructure to enable research and operations, oversees admissions and financial aid, enrollment, course offerings, tuition and fees, and related policies. In collaboration with the Chancellor, the Provost is the administrative and academic spokesperson to the Faculty Council, General Administration, the Board of Trustees and the Employee Forum.

Responsibilities
- The Provost leads the University in its academic strategy, planning, and implementation and upholds academic policies and practices while promoting the wellbeing of faculty and students.
- The Provost serves as chief advocate for faculty, leads the Deans and chairs the Deans’ Council, evaluates deans and vice provosts, and manages budgets for academic units.
- The Provost approves faculty promotions, retentions, special hires, tenure decisions and new appointments, and leads searches for Deans, Vice Provosts and selected Vice Chancellors.
- The Provost establishes the academic standards and policies that guide student conduct and professional behavior among faculty and administrators; addresses issues with the Schools, faculty, or students as needed.
- The Provost guides the conduct of research and scholarship and oversees the development of an information infrastructure that enables research and operations; provides leadership for admissions and financial aid, enrollment management, course offerings, and related policies.
- In collaboration with the Chancellor, the Provost is the administrative and academic spokesperson to the Faculty Council, General Administration, the Board of Trustees and the Employee Forum.
Education and Experience
- Minimum Education And Experience Requirements : An earned terminal degree, a record of exceptional leadership success, and evidence of scholarly, professional, or creative achievement is required.
Qualifications
- Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience : The incumbent must possess the intellectual vision and energy to lead a complex, highly-ranked R1 institution of higher education in sustaining its national prominence. The incumbent must also motivate a university-wide team, deepen the understanding and appreciation of the University’s core values, and demonstrate responsiveness to the needs of students, faculty, and staff of a public doctoral university.
Campus Security Authority Responsibilities
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. The incumbent will report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
