Overview
Manager, Workers' Compensation at Port of Seattle. Oversees the Port's Self-Insured and Self-Administered Workers’ Compensation program and ensures program compliance with Title 51 of the Industrial Insurance Laws in the State of Washington. Serves as the System Administrator of the Origami claims management system.
Responsibilities
- Provide daily management, program oversight, and confidentiality to the processing and adjudication of claims and legal documents associated with claims.
- Participate in settlement negotiations, recommend loss control strategies, and instruct Port personnel on workers’ compensation issues.
- Develop, recommend, and implement workers' compensation policies and procedures, including setting targets for milestones, ensuring adherence to deadlines, and implementing cost-effective practices.
- Participate in and support auditing activities by providing claim records and material as requested by external regulators such as the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries, Washington State Insurance Commission, and internal auditing personnel.
- Ensure the claims record management system interfaces with multiple internal and external systems to provide accurate record reporting and billing services.
- Provide claim and injury reporting to internal departments to assist executives, managers, human resources, and labor in risk mitigation strategies. Partner with Health & Safety Program Managers to review and analyze specific exposures and assist with recommending injury prevention strategies.
- Provide customer service by communicating with injured workers, vocational counselors, nurse case managers, physicians, insurance companies, private investigators, employee relations, labor unions, regulators, and internal and external legal counsel.
- Supervise, train, and collaborate with the Workers’ Compensation Claims Administrator and Workers' Compensation Administrative Assistant.
- Develop, conduct, evaluate, and document workers' compensation curriculum and training to support workforce comprehension and compliance as required by state and federal regulations.
Who you are
- Experienced – five years of experience adjudicating Washington State workers’ compensation claims, including managing self-insured and self-administered industrial insurance programs under Title 51; experience with electronic claims management systems, medical bill review, wage calculation and payment of employee workers' compensation claims, and at least two years of supervisory or lead experience.
- Certifications – Washington State Department of Labor and Industries Certified Claims Adjudicator.

- Efficient Communicator – Ability to communicate effectively via written, oral, electronic, and in-person channels with diverse audiences and across departments, using various software tools for documentation and reporting.
- Analytical Leader – Ability to assess, interpret, and report data and processes; highly organized to lead complex, technical programs across multiple departments.
What you need to know
- Work Schedule – Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (40 hours per week). Some flexibility may be available; may be required to work weekends, holidays, and during emergencies.
- Work Environment – Hybrid/in-office setting at management’s discretion.
- Washington State Residency – Must establish a residence in Washington within 30 days of hire and maintain WA residency during employment. Telework, if eligible, must be performed in Washington.
- Safety Requirements – Compliance with all work rules, safety, and PPE requirements.
- Security Requirements – Pass TSA and FBI background checks; Port of Seattle ID badge contingent on clearance.

Compensation
- Salary range: Minimum 125,925.00; Maximum 170,370.00.
