Overview The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Office of Human Resources is recruiting for a compensation and benefits specialist. The role operates as a cross-functional professional for both the Compensation team and the Benefits team within central Human Resources. This is a hybrid position at the University of Maryland, Baltimore campus in Baltimore City, requiring up to three in-office days per week with remote work available after the training period.

Responsibilities Compensation Duties:

Ensures salaries for new, promoted, and reevaluated staff comply with federal, state, local laws and regulations and UMB policies and procedures, including performing an equity analysis considering internal and external market factors.

Ensures the accuracy of pay-related changes for UMB employees, including pay changes related to job changes, Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA), and merit changes.

Collaborates with clients to determine compensation needs and develop action plans to meet requests.

Consults with clients to determine effective and efficient organizational structure and resource allocation within budgetary restraints to meet unit needs.

Performs job analysis and job evaluation, including organizational analysis and the hierarchical structure of jobs.

Researches markets in which the University competes for talent; participates in market salary surveys; and conducts market pricing to determine internal and external job value.

Identifies job descriptions and career ladders to aid clients in designing development opportunities within the unit.

Reviews new jobs to determine appropriate classification; creates or modifies job descriptions as needed to reflect current roles, responsibilities, and requirements.

Participates as a member of committees, projects, or initiatives; assists in the development and implementation of project plans and scope.

Statistically analyzes compensation data to determine trends and variances, ensures data integrity, identifies variances, and develops action plans and process improvements to enhance data outcomes.

Follows up with clients to ensure data accuracy and continually reviews processes to improve workflow and timeliness of data exchange.

Benefits Duties:

Administers tuition remission and reimbursement programs, including reviewing applications, responding to employee inquiries, and ensuring compliance with USM and UMB policies and deadlines.

Serves as a back-up for monitoring and triaging the Benefits Department email inbox and phone line, providing timely and accurate responses or routing inquiries to the appropriate team member.

Assists in planning and executing major benefits events and initiatives (e.g., Open Enrollment and Health & Wellness Fair), including logistics coordination, communications support, and on-site assistance.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor's degree.

Experience:

Two (2) years of related human resources experience including direct experience with job analysis, job evaluation, and benefits administration. Experience should include proficiency with database and spreadsheet tools and statistical data review.

Additional related experience and formal education may be substituted on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience, as allowed by policy.

Hiring Range:

Up to $86,860, commensurate with education and experience.
