JOB TITLE:
Recreation Coordinator – Full-Time
Hourly, FLSA Non-Exempt TPOAM Grade 8 – Bargaining Unit Position
DEPARTMENT/DIVISION: Recreation Department
JOB SUMMARY: The City of Oak Park is seeking an enthusiastic candidate for the position of Recreation Coordinator. This is a unique opportunity for a qualified candidate as the City of Oak Park is beginning construction on its new Community Event Hub, Amphitheater and Community Center with an indoor pool and gymnasium. The Recreation Coordinator is responsible for planning, organizing, and supervising City-wide youth and adult programs, special events, and athletics along with selecting, training and supervising program staff and volunteers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Organize and supervise a year-round athletic program
Develop, lead and promote a variety of classes, programs and special events
Assist in the development and implementation and primary oversite of aquatic programs for the new indoor community pool, est. opening 2027
Recruit, train and supervise part-time seasonal employees and volunteers
Plan, organize, and schedule Summer Day Camp and specialty
Collaborate with the Oak Park Public Library and the Oak Park Public High Schools to develop teen programming
Shared responsibility in creating, developing, and implementing special events such as July 4th activities (Mayor's Run, Fun Fest and Parade), Daddy Daughter and Mon and Son Dances, and Trunk or Treat
Prepare recommendations for the departmental budget
Secure program resources through grants, sponsorships, and
Prepare written communications and verbally communicate with coaches, parents, participants, and volunteers
Compile information and prepare correspondence, payroll, records and reports requiring a knowledge of program/departmental rules and regulations
Shared responsibility for scheduling and supervising building monitors and park rangers
Providing assistance when needed, for community center rentals, shelter rentals and front desk program registrations and customer service, etc.
Participate in staff meetings, professional development activities sponsored by the department; work cooperatively with other staff and promote teamwork.
Act as a liaison between the department and local schools, service clubs,
Order program materials and supplies and maintain an inventory of athletic and program supplies
Prepare program flyers, reports and informational
Expected to attend/check in with programs and events during the evenings and weekends and be on-call when programs and staff are scheduled
May be asked to perform other duties related to the day-to-day operation of the department
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
Initiative and resourcefulness in problem
Ability to work and communicate effectively with the public and staff
Reasonable knowledge of the rules and regulations for youth and adult athletic and recreational programs including baseball, T-ball, flag football, soccer, volleyball, softball, etc.
Ability to organize league and tournament schedules
Aquatic programs, teen and youth camp experience
Organizational, supervisory and time management skills
Ability to develop and implement a variety of special event
Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 applications and software, and the ability to navigate through internet
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED:
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college/university, in Parks & Recreation, Sports Management, Education or other closely related field.
A minimum of two (2) years of combined experience working in the field of recreation, sports, children/teen-centered programming, aquatics, or family events.
Must obtain certification as an Archery Instructor and First Aid/CPR Instructor within 90 days of
Must have a valid Michigan Driver's License, and a driving record that meets the minimum City qualifications, to travel to various locations in/outside the city.
PREFERRED:
Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) Certified
Certified Pool Operator (CPO) Certified
Current First Aid & CPR Certified or First Aid/CPR Instructor
SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS: The Recreation Coordinator must be available for all dates of assignment, including, but not limited to, days, evenings, weekends, holidays to attend meetings, programs, and special events.
SALARY RANGE: This is a full-time position TPOAM Bargaining Unit position with an hourly pay rate of $24.0495 - $27.8877 per hour, with a comprehensive package that includes healthcare, dental, vision, life insurance, retirement and section 125 plan.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to speak and hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. Be able to utilize a computer for viewing assorted computer files and operate a department cell phone. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move items of up to 50 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will have a business office setting/desk but is also required to work in the field and attend meetings after standard business hours. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet but can be louder at events.
The employee may also be required to work in inclement weather and will be supervising a pool setting outdoors.
