Overview
Associate Director of Public Interest Programs, Career Development Office (4517U), Berkeley Law. The AD provides expert career counseling to Berkeley Law's 900 J.D. students and 10,000+ alumni, focusing on public interest and public sector paths. The AD designs, develops, and implements programs, events, services, and resources to educate students about public interest career options and to enhance job search and networking skills. The AD also administers programs offering financial support to students pursuing public interest work (e.g., summer and post-graduate fellowships). Departmental context: The Career Development Office (CDO) provides career advice to students and alumni across traditional and nontraditional paths, with four major employer categories (judicial clerkships, public interest, government, private sector) and a focus on expanding access to public interest opportunities. Responsibilities
Research and analyze the public interest legal services and job markets, forecasting emerging trends. Identify current and emerging career options and assess their feasibility for students. Assess evolving career development needs of alumni and design/deploy workshops, programs, services, and resources (including online guides and webcasts) to meet these needs. Recommend improvements to existing services and develop entirely new services, programs, and resources. Provide one-on-one, tailored career counseling to students pursuing public interest careers or internships; assist with self-assessments. Leverage professional networks to provide job leads and networking contacts and promote DEIB best practices in all interactions. Develop and maintain the Law School’s professional network of public interest employers and related professionals and cultivate new relationships to broaden opportunities for students. Lead and oversee delivery of broad career programs and events (workshops, resources) and supervise career services staff in support tasks (room reservations, catering, announcements). Determine the most effective media for delivering content (online, print, blogs, social media, live webcasting, etc.). Collaborate with Law School departments and centers (e.g., Henderson Center for Social Justice) to design mutually beneficial programs and services; liaise with faculty, student organizations, and other units. Participate in panels, presentations, and research/articles related to public interest careers through local and national organizations (e.g., OneJustice, Equal Justice Works, NALP) and media opportunities. Required Qualifications
Advanced knowledge of career decision making, job search techniques, and career services needs of employers, alumni, and faculty. Detailed knowledge of the public interest legal job market and general familiarity with the private sector market. Extensive professional network of practicing attorneys and potential employers. Strong problem-solving, presentation, verbal and written communication, and organizational skills. Ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds. Creative, entrepreneurial, forward-looking approach with the ability to design and deliver innovative programs. Commitment to delivering outstanding client and personal services, with strong understanding of client needs assessment and service quality evaluation. Understanding of human behavior, learning, and motivation; ability to translate DEIB concepts into practice. Excellent computer skills (including Excel and PowerPoint) and ability to adapt to new software and online resources. Commitment to fostering an inclusive community and sensitivity to diverse backgrounds among students, faculty, and staff. Education/Training
Advanced degree in a related area (e.g., JD, LL.M., or equivalent experience). Significant public interest legal practice experience (5+ years). Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of career development theories and needs assessment; workshop/program design and implementation. Knowledge of UC programs or ability to learn them. Salary & Benefits
Salary information: budgeted range $90,000.00 – $104,640.00. This is a 100% full-time, exempt position eligible for UC benefits. Hybrid position with up to 20% remote capability.
