This position provides legal advice and services to Wake Forest University on a broad range of matters, with a primary focus on student affairs, regulatory matters, and related compliance. The role works closely with campus stakeholders including the Division of Campus Life, Office of Student Conduct, Title IX Office and Office of Institutional Equity, Center for Learning, Access, and Student Success, Housing and Residential Life, University Police, and the Compliance Office to ensure compliance with federal and state laws, regulations, and university policies. The position also serves as a legal advisor to CARE, threat assessment, and incident response teams, and manages a portfolio of student-related legal issues. The role may lead or participate in other teams within the Office of General Counsel and serves on university committees and projects as assigned.
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Law degree (J.D.) from an accredited law school with a minimum of 6 years of relevant legal experience for Assistant or 10 years for Associate, preferably with a focus on education, student affairs, or higher education compliance. Member in good standing of the North Carolina State Bar, or attainment of full membership within one year of hire. Ability to investigate and analyze information and to draw conclusions. Experience in conducting or advising on sexual misconduct or related student investigations. Experience in developing and delivering training programs for faculty, students, and staff on Title IX, sexual misconduct prevention, or related topics. Ability to quickly acquire and apply new legal knowledge and evolving regulations. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to explain complex legal concepts to non-lawyers. Strong legal research, writing, and analytical abilities; negotiation and conflict management skills. Ability to organize workflow, manage multiple priorities, and maintain high attention to detail and confidentiality. Ability to work independently with good judgment and discretion; ability to supervise paralegals and collaborate with colleagues. Commitment to the Universitys mission and to fostering inclusive relationships with diverse constituents. Proficiency in Google Suite, Microsoft Office, and related software; authorization to work in the United States.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Experience as in-house counsel in a higher education setting or comparable environment. Knowledge of a broad range of legal issues affecting higher education and experience drafting contracts and other documents.
Accountabilities
Responsible for own work and may supervise paralegal and support staff.
Physical Requirements
Sedentary work; occasional movement within campus and occasional interaction with others; standing, walking, and repetitive motions may be required. Environmental Conditions
Work is typically performed in an office environment. This position is primarily in-person at the Office of General Counsel in Winston-Salem, NC, with an option for remote work one day per week with supervisor approval. Time Type Requirement
