Today, 119 years later the YWCO has expanded its programming to promote healthy lifestyles through recreation, physical fitness activities, and social interaction among children, families and senior adults in the Athens area.
The YWCO serves the Athens community by providing programming options that teach new skills, increase self-confidence, build character, develop physical fitness, and promote healthy lifestyles. Offering a wide range of recreation activities for men and women, fitness classes, swim lessons and after school and summer camp experiences, the YWCO encourages social interaction among children, families and senior adults.
Position Overview The YWCO is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Director of Aquatics to oversee all aspects of our aquatic programs and facilities. This leadership role is responsible for instruction, staff supervision, safety, scheduling, and program development. The Director of Aquatics ensures that all participants enjoy a positive, safe, and engaging aquatic experience while upholding the highest standards of education, service, and safety.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage all aquatic programs, including swim lessons, recreational swimming, competitive training, and specialty classes.
Recruit, hire, train, and supervise lifeguards, swim instructors, and coaching staff.
Ensure compliance with all safety protocols, state and local regulations, and YWCO policies.
Develop and implement swim curriculum, lesson plans, and training schedules.
Coordinate swim meets, special events, and community outreach programs.
Oversee pool maintenance and facility operations in partnership with facility staff.
Manage program budgets, scheduling, and maintain accurate program records.
Build strong relationships and communicate effectively with parents, athletes, staff, and community members.
Develop and oversee aquatic programming, including swim lesson grants and any additional programs as assigned.
Serve as CPO to ensure proper pool chemical balance, maintain all required safety inspections, and work with the maintenance team to address pool equipment and facility repairs as needed.
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in aquatic program management, coaching, or related leadership role.
Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
Required Certifications
Current Lifeguard Certification (American Red Cross or equivalent)
CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
WSI (Water Safety Instructor) or equivalent swim instruction certification
Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) preferred
