Generate new product concepts with a user-centered approach, focusing on ergonomics, aesthetics, and functional innovation. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define solutions meeting functional requirements while enhancing the user experience. Lead and participate in design studies to solve technical and user-experience challenges. Build and test quick turnaround, low-fidelity prototypes and document findings from user testing. Approach design challenges with curiosity and resilience, striving to rethink and innovate. Role Description
This role sits at the intersection of Industrial Design and Mechanical Engineering, focusing on translating open-ended challenges into meaningful, user-centered solutions. Candidates should be comfortable ideating conceptually, building rapid prototypes, and iterating on designs with user testing and technical feedback. Qualifications
Education: Current student in their third year or beyond of a bachelor's program, enrolled in a master's program now or within the past year. Ability to work full-time, 40 hours per week onsite in Needham, MA. Academic focus on Industrial Design, Product Design Engineering, Mechanical Engineering with related coursework. Enthusiasm for user-centered product design, form, and function. Experience with CAD software (SolidWorks, Creo, or Rhino) and basic prototyping tools including 3D printing. Hands-on experience building physical prototypes in plastics or metals; familiarity with machine shop equipment. Basic understanding of electronics and components used in small appliances (motors, sensors, PCBAs) is desirable. Experience with rapid prototyping tools like Arduino or Raspberry Pi is a plus. Strong communication skills to convey ideas to technical and non-technical audiences. Strong intuition for mechanical engineering and physics principles as applied to product design and human-centered engineering. Analytical and detail-oriented with a creative approach to problem-solving. Demonstrates intellectual curiosity, hands-on attitude, and a commitment to elegant, innovative solutions. Compensation Range: $28/hr - $37/hr. Specific compensation is set on a standardized scale aligned with your educational level at the time of hire.
