Chief Accounting Officer (CAO) Job Description Our client, a leading firm in the financial services industry, is seeking a highly experienced and strategic Chief Accounting Officer (CAO) to join its executive leadership team. This role is a pivotal position that will directly influence the company’s financial strategy and operational excellence, ensuring the integrity and accuracy of our financial reporting in a high-growth environment. As the primary authority on all accounting matters, the CAO will be a key partner to the CFO, CEO, and other C-level executives, providing critical insights that inform business decisions and support our company\u2019s continued growth and success.

Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Oversight:

Direct the entire accounting function, including financial reporting, general ledger, and consolidations, ensuring all activities align with the company\u2019s strategic goals and regulatory requirements unique to the financial services sector.

Technical Accounting & Compliance:

Serve as the ultimate subject matter expert for US GAAP, proactively leading the research, evaluation, and documentation of the accounting implications of complex transactions, including but not limited to, M&A, business combinations, debt offerings, equity transactions, financial instruments, and securitization.

Process Improvement & Automation:

Champion and lead initiatives for continuous improvement and automation within the accounting and finance functions. Drive the selection and implementation of new technologies (e.g., ERP systems, financial reporting tools like Workiva) to enhance efficiency and reporting accuracy. Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing accounting team. Define team structure, roles, and responsibilities to support the company’s strategic objectives.

Experience & Qualifications

Bachelor\'s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA license is required.

Requires a minimum of 15 years of progressive accounting experience, including significant leadership roles, with a strong preference for a combination of Big 4 public accounting and industry experience within a financial services, lending or banking environment, specifically with expertise in securitization.

Demonstrated experience in a leadership role (e.g., VP of Accounting, Corporate Controller) at a company that has successfully managed a high-growth trajectory.

Skills & Knowledge

Exceptional and deep knowledge of US GAAP and technical accounting, including revenue recognition, leases, stock-based compensation, business combinations, and debt and equity. Specific expertise in the accounting for securitization is essential.

Proven experience in managing a financial reporting and consolidation process.

Familiarity with financial reporting tools such as Workiva and a solid understanding of XBRL tagging are highly preferred.

Superior leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and collaborate across all levels of the organization and with external stakeholders.

Demonstrated ability to handle a high-growth environment, manage multiple priorities, and execute complex projects with a high degree of urgency and accuracy.
