Salary : Architect VI, AR-28: $10,071.00 - $12,855.00 per month Examples of Duties Plans, directs, advises on and reviews the work of subordinate professional and nonprofessional personnel engaged in architectural design projects, including the preparation of plans, specifications and cost estimates; determines work priorities, and makes broad work assignments; develops design criteria, techniques, methods and procedures for the accomplishment of architectural projects; analyzes and reviews the work of subordinates in terms of technical, functional and aesthetic adequacy, and for conformance to departmental policies, regulations, and legal requirements. Coordinates activities of its section with other sections or departments, other government agencies, private contractors or consultants, and the public; assists in the development of broad work programs and policies and in preparing and justifying budgets; makes recommendations and commitments concerning design changes to meet special conditions or functions or the need for hiring special consultants for mechanical, electrical, or structural engineering problems, subsurface investigation, and surveying. Recommends organizational and functional changes, and performs personnel management functions such as approving leave, initiating requests for personnel action, evaluating employee performance, and handling disciplinary problems; serves as a technical consultant on architectural matters; and prepares or directs the preparation of technical reports and correspondence. Minimum Qualifications Education Requirement : Graduation from an accredited school or college of architecture or engineering, with a degree in architecture or architectural engineering. Four (4) years of successful and progressive experience in architecture which will enable the applicant to perform successfully at the professional level may be substituted for graduation from college provided this experience demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional architecture and an understanding of the field of architecture comparable to a four-year bachelors degree. Experience Requirements : Except for substitutions provided, applicants must have progressively responsible experience as described below. For Architect VI: 4 years of experience in architecture with 1 year of supervisory/administrative experience and total 5 years, with Administrative Experience demonstrating managerial capabilities. Administrative Experience : Applicants for Architect VI must demonstrate possession of administrative aptitude. This may be shown by successful assignments or projects involving administrative problems, management-focused performance, completed courses in management, and demonstrations of leadership and managerial capabilities. Architectural Experience : Professional architectural work experience in developing and preparing complete designs, drawings, specifications, estimates of buildings, structure, and installations. Non-qualifying Architectural Experience : See the list of examples of experiences not acceptable as professional architectural experience. Routine drafting or development of plans where no original investigations or designs are involved; Artistic, scientific or technical illustrating activities in drawing, inking, or coloring maps, charts, etc.; Landscape architectural work mainly involving land areas and landscape features; City or community planning relating to broad social and economic development; Structural engineering experience per se; analysis, design of structural elements; Inspection and field supervision of construction; Experience in design, fabrication, testing, operation, installation or maintenance of electrical, mechanical, or related systems; Ship hull repair; and Engineering experience limited to contract specifications or material cost estimation. Quality of Experience : The required amount of experience must show the ability to perform the duties of the position. For Architect VI, at least one year of required Architectural Experience must be comparable to the Architect IV level in the State service with licensed professional architectural experience. Supervisory Experience : Professional architectural experience including coordinating workloads, evaluating performance, training subordinates, and maintaining high standards. Substitutions Allowed : Masters degree in Architecture or Architectural Engineering may substitute for one year of architectural experience. Excess supervisory experience may substitute for architectural experience on a year-for-year basis. Professional License Requirement : For Architect IV and higher, Hawaii State Certificate of Registration as a professional architect is required. Driver's License : Some positions require a valid Hawaii State drivers license. Tests : Applicants without a bachelors degree may be required to take tests measuring knowledge of architectural sciences and techniques. Supervisory or Administrative Judgment Tests may be required for supervisory/administrative levels. Supplemental Information Salary : The advertised salary is based on full-time employment and includes applicable differentials. Requirements : Applicants must meet all requirements as of the application date. Calculation of experience is based on full-time 40-hour weeks; part-time experience is pro-rated.
