Purpose Innovation through external research collaborations is a key component of Lilly Research Laboratories (LRL’s) strategy to deliver a sustained flow of innovation to the portfolio. The Alliance and Integration Management team will enable effective execution and maximize the value of our strategic external research collaborations and partnerships.

The Goals Of The Alliance Integration Management Team Are

Deliver alliance and integration management support to research collaborations with significant strategic and technical risk, financial investment, and business complexity to achieve LRL business objectives.

Partner with LRL business sponsors to develop business objectives and operational framework for strategic research collaborations to achieve desired outcomes.

Develop alliance and integration management best practices to support research collaborations across the LRL organization.

Responsibilities

Alliance & Integration Management:

Lead a portfolio of external collaboration project(s)/program(s) with significant risk, financial/resource requirements, and complexity to achieve key objectives. Develop and implement the operational framework and effectively manage Lilly’s relationship with the external partner to deliver the project's strategic goals. Manage the complex dynamics and situations that arise in the course of collaborative interactions with external partners; anticipate and resolve issues that would hinder achieving the objectives of the collaboration; coach/advise leaders and team members to address issues; negotiate alignment with the partner’s leaders; negotiate amendments; make recommendations to management regarding a wide range of business matters related to the partnership.

Relationship Management & Project Governance:

Establish partnership mission and guiding principles for the alliance and act as an independent ombudsman to lead the team and support the sponsors. Lead and facilitate alliance governance meetings. Ensure that Lilly team members discuss relevant corporate policies, processes, and priorities with the partner and help gain alignment on new alliance processes developed (e.g., Compliance, Business Planning, etc.). Develop partnership interventions to increase teamwork/trust between Lilly and its partners.

Operational execution:

Ensure that integrated, transparent business processes are established between internal and external partners to ensure the teams meet the alliance's stated objectives and goals within contractual obligations.

Impact:

Drive results across multiple functions and provide recommendations/solutions to improve the effectiveness of Lilly’s external collaborations. Possible areas for solutions include governance, decision-making, structure, inter/intracompany alignment, and roles & responsibilities.

Problem-Solving & Conflict Management:

Proactively identify potential issues/problems and develop mitigation and contingency plans. Minimize the impact of disagreements and lead conflict resolution efforts ("shock absorber" for senior management). Identify and resolve complex problems that may have a broad business impact.

Decision-making, influence, & Negotiation:

Anticipate key decision points and plan for all aspects of developing, forming, managing, and, if necessary, restructuring or terminating alliances. Collaborate with sponsors and stakeholders to influence issue resolution and decisions associated with the coalition. Recognized as an internal expert in alliance management. Provide oversight and accountability for the contract terms related to the alliance. Lead negotiations to amend existing contracts. Provide timely constructive feedback to alliance partners and Lilly personnel concerning their performance in keeping the alliance healthy. Share key learnings across Lilly regarding the structure of collaborations (what has worked well, what can be improved) to further Lilly’s partnership capabilities, including coordination/communication with the Alliance and Integration Management team.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree desired: JD, PhD, PharmD and/or MBA

10+ years of pharmaceutical or biotech industry experience with drug discovery, development, and commercial processes needed to move molecules through the pipeline.

Additional Preferences

Experience in alliance management supporting multiple strategic partnerships and/or collaborations, including experience in business development.

Strong scientific acumen

Strong working knowledge of compliance policies and processes governing third-party relationships

Effective leadership to influence decisions and implement a set course of action.

Ability to work across cultures – both corporate and geographic/cultural boundaries

Highly developed project management and team facilitation skills

Demonstrated ability to navigate complex situations/issues and lead by influence.

Ability to interpret company policies/procedures to resolve complex problems.

Excellent written and oral communication skills – the ability to distill complex ideas and plans into a few pages of written material to drive decision-making at senior levels of leadership.

Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaborate with all levels of an organization.

Good judgment in addressing difficult/sensitive issues with alliance partners and key stakeholders.

Significant mediation skills for group or individual interactions

Legal and financial acumen to understand contractual terms and issues.

Demonstrated negotiation skills to achieve desired business results.

Location and Travel

This role is based in Indianapolis, IN and relocation is provided. Remote not considered.

Travel: 10-25% (in the absence of global/corporate travel restrictions)

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location. The anticipated wage for this position is $162,000 - $237,600. Full-time employees will be eligible for a company bonus and Lilly provides a comprehensive benefits program.
