Overview
The position is the Airport Fire Marshal (Airport Division Fire Chief, Fire Prevention) within the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport Fire and Rescue Department (BWI FRD). The office is the sole procurement unit for the Maryland Aviation Administration (MAA) and is responsible for providing all aspects of the procurement program in support of the Administration’s capital program and operating budget. The incumbent serves at the pleasure of the appointing authority. MAA owns and operates BWI Thurgood Marshall and Martin State Airports, serving over 27 million passengers annually. Note: This is an emergency essential position. The employee must be available to work during weather, operational, and/or disaster emergency conditions and may be required to work any shift to meet operational needs. Location: BWI Marshall Airport, Anne Arundel County, MD. Responsibilities
Manage the Fire Prevention and Inspection programs for the Fire Rescue Department (FRD) and MAA policy/procedures; develop fire protection and detection programs and advise staff. Supervise Fire Inspectors, Fire Protection Engineers, and administrative support to ensure work complies with codes, rules, and regulations; coordinate prevention techniques, schedules, and reporting. Develop, coordinate, schedule, and review all fire department prevention and inspection programs; oversee subordinate staff including Airport Fire Captains, Lieutenants, and Paramedic Lieutenants. Additional notes: The employee will be assigned duties requiring operation of a motor vehicle and must possess a Maryland valid driver’s license. Education:
Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate. Experience:
Four years of experience as a career fire officer (Lieutenant or above) at BWI FRD or a comparable airport, municipality, or military fire department. Note:
A Bachelor of Science Degree in Fire Protection Engineering from an accredited institution can substitute for two years of the required experience. Certifications (at time of application): NFPA 1021 Fire Officer Level II NFPA 1041 Emergency Service Instructor Level I NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector Level II NFPA 472 Haz-Mat Incident Commander NFPA 1521 Incident Safety Officer Additional notes and requirements include: NFPA and other acceptable certifications as recognized by the National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications or International Fire Service Accreditation Congress/DoD. Must obtain NFPA 1003 Airport Firefighter certification within six months of appointment. Must possess and maintain MD EMT-B certification within one year after appointment. Annual medical and fitness evaluations required; movement-area vehicle operation training and annual renewal as applicable. Obtain and maintain Airport Security Identification Badge and U.S. Customs clearance as per policies. Essential Employee status; subject to background checks and substance abuse testing per regulations; pre-employment testing may be required.
