At Webster Bank, our financial intermediation activities are organized broadly around three lines of business: the Consumer Bank, the Commercial Bank, and Healthcare Financial Services. This position is aligned to the Commercial Bank, reporting into the Strategic Delivery & Governance team within the Commercial Administration organization.
The
Managing Director, Commercial Bank Governance
will lead the development and execution of a comprehensive first-line governance framework for the Commercial Bank. This role is critical to ensuring that internal procedures, templates, and operational practices are aligned with regulatory expectations, internal control standards, and business strategy.
This leader will serve as a key liaison between the Commercial Bank, the centralized Front Line Control Office (FLCO), and second-line risk and compliance partners. The ideal candidate will bring deep commercial banking expertise, a strong understanding of OCC Heightened Standards, and the ability to influence across all levels of the organization.
Responsibilities
Establish and implement a first-line governance and quality control framework for Commercial Banking, aligned to enterprise standards and regulatory expectations, covering both credit and compliance domains.
Lead the governance of business-owned compliance activities, including regulatory change management, exam readiness, and coordination with second-line Compliance.
Collaborate with FLCO leadership to ensure alignment between control execution and procedural governance.
Collaborate with second and third lines of defense to ensure regulatory expectations and internal policies are embedded in frontline practices.
Develop and maintain governance routines, including documentation review cycles, documentation standards, and reporting to Commercial Bank leadership.
Lead a team responsible for managing critical risk programs (e.g., regulatory compliance, quality control, policy/procedure governance) for the Commercial Bank.
Support regulatory and internal reviews, including documentation preparation, walkthroughs, and response coordination.
Aid in the resolution of complex operational risk issues and contribute to a risk-aware culture through training and communication.
Mentor and build a high-performing team, fostering a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree or professional certification (e.g., CRCM, CRMA) preferred.
10+ years of experience in commercial banking, credit operations, or first-line risk management, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
Deep understanding of OCC Heightened Standards, risk governance frameworks, and three-lines-of-defense models.
Strong project management and documentation skills; experience with governance tools such as SharePoint, How2Work, or similar platforms.
Familiarity with commercial lending systems (e.g., Sageworks, nCino, PrecisionLender, Salesforce, Fiserv, LoanIQ, Nautilus) is a plus.
Demonstrated ability to build and scale teams, drive change, and operate in a fast-paced, regulated environment.
The estimated salary range for this position is $175,000.00 to $190,000.00. Actual salary may vary up or down depending on job-related factors which may include knowledge, skills, experience, and location. In addition, this position is eligible for incentive compensation.
