Senior Scientist – Medicinal & Bioconjugation Chemistry

At Gilead Sciences, we’re creating a healthier world for all people. For more than 35 years, we’ve tackled HIV, viral hepatitis, COVID-19 and cancer, and we’re committed to developing therapies that improve lives and to ensuring access to these therapies globally. We’re looking for people who can help us achieve bold scientific goals through collaboration, determination and drive. This role represents an opportunity to play an integral role in growing Gilead’s bioconjugation team, which bridges medicinal chemistry, protein therapeutics and additional functions using traditional and next-generation bioconjugation techniques. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in synthesis, purification and characterization of small molecule, peptide/protein and lipid nanoparticle (LNP) bioconjugates, and a strong foundation in synthetic organic/medicinal chemistry as applied to small molecule drug discovery. Responsibilities

Bioconjugation Chemistry: Lead the expansion of Gilead’s ADC and bioconjugation labs and capabilities; coordinate design, synthesis and purification of protein bioconjugates across medicinal chemistry, protein therapeutics and discovery biology. Medicinal Chemistry: Design and optimization of traditional small molecule inhibitors, degraders and cytotoxic payloads; devise linkers for optimal properties of bioconjugates; contribute to small molecule drug discovery through SAR interpretation and design/synthesis of new analogs. Propose and Execute New Projects: identify opportunities from internal and external pipelines; develop project proposals and present at scientific review meetings. Bioconjugation Strategy: contribute to long-term growth and capability assessment across new projects and modalities. Method Development: develop and optimize bioconjugation methodologies; troubleshoot workflows and propose improvements. Documentation: maintain accurate records of experiments, analyses and results in line with industry standards and regulatory requirements. ADC Data Management: collaborate with Research Data Sciences and Research Informatics to enable structured data acquisition for ADC modalities. Training and Support: provide training and technical support to junior staff and team members on bioconjugation techniques and instrument operation. Collaboration: communicate effectively and collaborate across R&D and with external collaborators; present scientific results at team meetings. Required Qualifications

Education: Ph.D. (with 2+ years), Master’s (with 8+ years) or Bachelor’s (with 6+ years) in organic chemistry or equivalent with emphasis in multi-step organic synthesis and bioconjugation. Bioconjugation Chemistry: expertise in synthesis and purification of protein bioconjugates; experience with ADC characterization methods (SEC, HIC, RPLC, high-resolution MS for DAR assessment). Experience with preparative methods for ADC purification; familiarity with automation platforms for high-throughput conjugation; familiarity with enzymatic conjugation methods; familiarity with traditional and next-generation bioconjugation handles; experience with linker design and cleavage mechanisms; hands-on protein handling and purification (buffer-exchange, desalting, Protein A). Exposure to various classes of small molecule payloads; track record as a project team leader; strong synthetic skills and knowledge of modern organic synthesis; strong data processing/analysis skills (coding for data analysis and database management); excellent troubleshooting and ability to optimize analytical methods. Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to present findings clearly; ability to work collaboratively in a team; high attention to detail. Preferred Qualifications

Education: Ph.D. (5+ years), Master’s (20+ years) or Bachelor’s (22+ years) in organic chemistry or related discipline with emphasis in multi-step synthesis and bioconjugation. Experience with potent compounds; multi-step organic synthesis and instrumentation; lipid bioconjugation and lipid nanoparticle antibody conjugation; parallel or automated synthesis. Knowledge of DMPK, ADME and pharmacology principles. People Leader Accountabilities
