Overview
E2 Consulting Engineers, Inc. is seeking an experienced distribution system planning engineer to support a major utility client in San Diego by providing planning, analysis, and project integration services across the clients electric distribution system. This role is responsible for system planning studies, capacity assessments, integration of distributed energy resources (DER), and development of projects to improve grid reliability, safety, and regulatory compliance. The position requires close collaboration with SDG&E planning engineers, project managers, and operations teams to evaluate system needs and develop solutions. The successful candidate will report to the distribution engineering manager. Responsibilities Perform detailed distribution system planning studies, including load forecasting, capacity analysis, voltage analysis, contingency assessments, and reliability improvements. Analyze the impact of new loads, DER interconnections (e.g., solar PV, energy storage), and electrification trends on the distribution network. Develop planning criteria, design recommendations, and project justifications to support capital improvement programs. Prepare technical reports, study documentation, and presentations for internal and regulatory stakeholders. Evaluate proposed projects for compliance with SDG&E standards, CPUC General Orders, and applicable codes. Support integration of planning data and recommendations into SDG&Es work management systems and capital project portfolios. Provide technical expertise on system modeling and simulation tools (e.g., CYME, Synergi, PSCAD). Coordinate with interdepartmental teams (Design, Operations, Protection, DER Integration) to align planning studies with execution strategies. Assist with stakeholder engagement, including municipal agencies, developers, and regulatory bodies, as needed. Contribute to process improvements and strategic initiatives to enhance planning efficiency and accuracy.
Qualifications Required
Bachelors degree in electrical engineering or related field. Minimum of 3 years of experience in electric distribution planning, system studies, or related engineering disciplines. Working knowledge of distribution system design and operations, load forecasting, and DER integration. Proficiency in modeling and simulation software (e.g., CYME, Synergi Electric, PSS/E, PSCAD). Familiarity with relevant codes and regulations, including CPUC General Orders (GO 95, GO 128), NEC, and NESC. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical writing skills. Ability to interpret and apply engineering standards accurately. Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
Preferred
Professional Engineer (PE) license in California or ability to obtain within 12 years. Prior experience supporting SDG&E or other California IOUs in distribution planning. Familiarity with DER integration processes, interconnection standards, and California Rule 21. Experience with electrification impact assessments (e.g., EV load impacts, heat pump adoption). Knowledge of GIS platforms and work management systems (SAP, ArcGIS).
Pay
$95,000 - $115,000 Entry-level (1 3 years) $115,000 - $140,000 Mid-level (3 7 years) $130,000+ Senior level (7+ years)
